About MIM Fixtures & Results News Social |
Well it was a good day for the senior teams in MIM with each of the two senior mens teams and the two senior womens team winning their games over the weekend. First up was a tricky fixture for MIM to travel to Aberdeen to play MBC Bon Accord. Despite MBC's record of having only won once previously this season it was always going to be a tricky fixture, however, despite going a goal down early in the match the boys managed to claim an impressive 7-3 win with the front pairing of Simon Flynn and David Guy scoring 4 between them. This coupled with results elsewhere in the league means the mens first team now have a cushion at the top in their bid to return to the top flight next season. Meanwhile the men's second string were faced with a tricky away tie to 4th placed Stewart's Melville FP in a local Edinburgh derby. Despite the difference in league positions MIM II took the lead through an penalty corner from Graeme Fyffe and shortly into the second half took a 2-0 lead via Iain Weddell's persistence. With Craig Thurtell in the MIM goal making some crucial saves the game was won despite a goal from Stewart's Melville with 10 minutes remaining. In the women's National League division 2, MIM II went back to the top of the league thanks to a 4-0 defeat of Dunfermline whilst Western B were suffering a shock 5-0 defeat to Grove A. Sunday's game saw the women's first team travel through to Glasgow to play a tough fixture against 4th placed Giffnock. Having secured a 3-2 victory saw MIM overtake Giffnock into 4th place and if they win the game in hand will also see them overtake Grange EL into 3rd place in National League division 1, an excellent achievement by any standards.
For the first time since the winter break Meadowmill witnessed the men's 1st and 2nd string playing both games at home and for the hockey enthusiast they were certainly entertained. The first game of the day saw MIM looking to exact some revenge against a GHK team who managed to steal a 1-0 victory in the first game of the season. However any hopes they had were dashed in the first minute when Philip Rae prodded home the first goal of the day. By the end GHK hopes were dashed after succuming to a 10-1 thrashing with David Guy scoring 4 and Richard Dochery hitting a brace. In the second match of the day MIM 2nd XI were looking to repeat a performance from earlier on in the season when they recorded their sole victory of the season against Stirling University. In a game that initially see-sawed the game took a major step in the direction of MIM II when, with the score at 2-2 Stirling University had a player sent off. After this MIM tool control and by the end had managed to score another 6 goals to take the final score to 8-2 with Jerry Scarlett scoring 4 to wrap a good day for the men's teams in the club.
Well as we enter the well earned christmas break, now is the time to reflect on the performances of the senior teams in the club. But first a word of congratulations to MIM U18 Women's side who, on Saturday, cruised past Bon Accord MBC 6-0 to clinch the fourth straight Scottish cup. In the men's league, due to a slip up by Harris against GHK last weekend, MIM's 1st team take a one point lead at the top of the league over the christmas break having lost two disappointing games against Harris and GHK and they will be looking forward to the reverse fixtures now where all the main challengers are to be played at Meadowmill. The second team, disrupted by early season confusion about who was organising it go into the christmas break languishingat the bottom of central league division 1, however, with a new captain in charge they will be looking forward to proving doubters wrong in the second half of the season. In the women's league the 1st team women managed to achieve their first goal of qualifying for a top 5 spot, it was a close run thing where up until the final weekend it was a case of 2 teams from 4 qualifying but thanks to a good record on not having lost a game all season the girls managed to qualify 4th and will now look forward to pushing the other top teams in the second half of the season. Similarly, the women's 2nd XI are enjoying yet another good season and the half way point sees them sitting top of national league division 2 having seen off many of their closest challengers.
For a record 4th time the U18 girls have reached the Scottish U18 Cup Final. The game is being played on Sunday 23rd Nov at Peffermill at 1.00pm. This will be a historic day for MIM Hockey Club as no other club has been able to dominate the U18 scene for a long time and as such the committee would like as many senior players as possible to support the girls on the day. To indicate just how successful the squad is 15 of the girls were capped for Scotland last year and several are now featuring in the 1st and 2nd team squads, so obviously this is the future of MIM ladies. Because of this I urge you and your fellow players (men and ladies) to go along to Peffermill and cheer on the team. Please pass all this info on to your players/friends of the club and take time out on Sun 23rd Nov to see the girls (hopefully) retain their trophy for the 4th year running. If you would like anymore info please email Chris Sutherland.
The club are looking for club members to spare a little bit of their time for the benefit of the club's development. Possibly once or twice a year on a wednesday night for about 2 hours. As you know George Guy and Chris Sutherland pretty much forge a lone furrow with trying to doing the youth coaching at Leith on a Wednesday night and in January Chris disappears down south working leaving george to carry on by himself. Therefore, we're asking people to volunteer to assist with the coaching, hopefully there will be enough interest that will mean we can implement a rota and people need only help out once or twice in the year. Even if you are not experienced the help would be great as the training schedules are all planned and worked out so all you have to do is turn up and help out. If you think of the standard of player we've developed even recently like David Guy, Philip Rae, Cameron Fraser, Eliza Chisholm, Emma Watson and Leigh Pendrigh all plying their trade in the 1st team imagine what we could od with a little extra help. So It's all in our own hands, if we want the club to develop we need to be prepared to put something into it in return so if you could pass back prospective names to Dave Cory and we'll take it from there.
After a captains and manager's meeting held on Wednesday 29th October the club wisahes to annouce that MIM II will continue to participate in Central League division 1 this year. After consultation with the 3rd team and with the SHU over fixtures it has been decided that some members of the 3rd XI will step up to fulfill the fixtures whilst the SHU will help to re-arrange fixtures not completed so far.
Due to a number of reasons including increased costs and a drain on resources amongst the men's section of the club. MIM II have now been withdrawn from playing in Regional League division 1. Players who previously played for the IIs will now go to bolster MIM IIIs attempts to gain promotion back to East division 1.
Teenager David Guy scored the first double-hat-trick for MIM for two decades as the Lothians-based hockey team stormed to the top of Division 2. The 17-year-old head boy at Gracemount High netted a treble in the first half and another three in the second with only one goal coming from open play. Karl Clarke joined Guy in the goal blitz with four goals in the 12-0 victory over struggling Aberdeen University. Also prominent was 14-year-old midfielder Cammy Fraser, a Watsons pupil, who was voted MIMs Man of the Match. The runaway win completed a win double weekend for MIM, who beat previous pace-setters Hillhead 5-2 with Guy netting a treble. Elsewhere, it was a good day for MIM. In the women's league MIM Ladies visited dundee to play Bonagrass Grove who were undefeated. A strong performance from MIM resulted in Emma Watson netting a rebound late in the game to secure a 1-1 draw which keeps them in touch with the leading players. Whilst in division 2 MIM ladies second string defeated a struggling Hillhead 2nd string 4-1 to go joint top of the league.
Well Saturay saw the clash of two of the top 4 teams when MIM entertained league leaders Greenock at Meadowmill. In what was always going to be a tense match MIM struggled to settle down in the first tem minutes. However after some good build up work MIM took the lead in the 10th minute with a well taken short corner. This gave the young MIM side some confidence and continued to press the attack and then in the 24th minute Simon Flynn drove into the D where he was illegally tackled which led to a penalty stroke conversion by David Guy to make to 2-0 at half time. After the interval it was a more confident MIM side who pressed the attacks and a further two goals were scored, one from a penalty stroke and one from a short corner. Then with 5 minutes to go the only blemish on the day was when Graham Stuart was unable to prevent Greenock scoring a consolation penalty stroke after a Greenock player had been fouled inside the D. The men's second string game had to be cancelled due to the fact that the watering system used at Meadowmill was not working. Meanwhile in the women's national league both women's teams won hard fought victories with the 1st team winning 3-1 in Melrose whilst the second string won 2-1 away to Grove to maintain their good start to the season.
Due to a number of factors the club are looking out for new players to join the club to play either national league or central league hockey. Ideally players should be aged between 18 and 25 and be prepared to train twice a week. If you are interested in joining then please contact either Dave Cory or George Guy. If there are any parents who have children aged between 6 and 16 who wish their children to take up hockey then please contact George Guy in the first instance.
Men`s National league side MIM, relegated last season from Division 1 for the first time in the club history, have taken the unique step of engaging Mabel Neish as coach for the coming season to effect an immediate return to the top flight. Neish is a well respected figure in the women`s game and was coach to the highly successful Junior National side that won the Celtic Cup and came a very creditable fourth in the `A` Division of the European Nations Finals last year. The MIM management is to be congratulated in this bold initiative, and also for stealing one of the country`s top female coaches right from under the noses of the leading women`s sides in the land. MIM manager Dave Cory has a clear target for the coming season, `our aim is to gain promotion at the first attempt, and to achieve this we are using state of the art training facilities, playing top English outfits in pre-season matches and trying to recruit new players to intensify competition for places.' A blow to MIM ambitions is that former captain Paul Chowdhry is not available this season due to domestic commitments. The basis of the MIM side will be home grown, relying on the promising youngsters of their own very successful youth development programme under the eye of legendary former international star Chris Sutherland. When MIM dominated Scottish Hockey in the 70s and 80s as Edinburgh Civil Service it was achieved by local talent like Sutherland, Alan Stobie, Dave Coventry and goalkeeper Maurice Wilson, perhaps these halcyon days are on their way back with a similar policy.
8 - 10th August 2003 - GHK PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT REPORT Well the first official pre-season games started for MIM this past weekend with a
tournament in Glasgow. The format of the tournament was to have 8 25 minute games spread
out over 2 days in the blistering heat, oh what joy it was too. Well the tournament went fairly well and we finished 3rd behind the hosts GHK and Western with a record of lost 2, drew 1 and won 5. |
