        Surname origin theories

Various sources indicate OUTTEN is a name belonging to one of the many Germanic Tribes. This is not particularly helpful because the Germanic or Teutonic people are so wide spread. There are three major branches of this linguistic group. East, North or Scandinavian, and West. Their languages are subdivided accourdingly. East; Gothic or Ancient German. North or Scandinavian; Old Norse, Icelandic, Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian. West is divided into High and Low as follows; High: Old High German (Frankish, Bavarian), Middle High German, and German. Low; Old Saxon, Low German or Plattdeutsch, Dutch, Flemish, and Frisian as well as Anglosaxon, Middle English, and Scottish. Some of these languages are no longer spoken. Furthermore, the spellings of the name OUTTEN are as varied as the different linguistic groups themselves. It has been suggested that the current spelling is a purely American form of the name. Determining the original spelling among so many possibilities has proven to be a daunting task.

Possible origin of surname as listed in dictionary of English language circa 450-1100 AD. UTAN- adv.- from outside, on the outside, without.Utan landes, abroad "outen" Middle English form of word given in quotation marks.

We will gladly provide lookups as time allows. Please allow us sufficient time to get back to you. Lately we have been swamped with requests , so don't worry if we don't get back to you immediately. We WILL get back to you eventually. We can only look up information. We cannot piece together or make sense of the information for you. We simply try to provide missing details for you (if we can find them.) Please be specific in your request for information. For instance, don't ask for an entire surname lookup, but rather, give us a specific person or two to look for. If you don't know specific dates, give a time-frame. If you know places or any other helpful information, that would be even better. We will send your information via email. If you are interested in trading lookups and/or information with us, let us know! We all have a common goal, let's try to help each other! Please email us with LOOKUP in the subject line.
