Check out our schedule of activities! We will change this to reflect each den's meeting dates/times and the Pack activities as they are scheduled.

PINEWOOD DERBY 2000

Our Pinewood Derby will be held during our regular pack meeting night on Friday, January 21, 2000. Registration and Inspection/Weigh-In will begin at 6:30 P.M. and last until 7:15 P.M. Please arrive as early as possible so that all the cars can be registered by 7:15 P.M. The meeting will begin with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by an explanation of the race rules before the races begin.

Please refer to the instruction sheet included with the car kit for assembly specifications. The Scout should be responsible for the construction of his own car. Some adult help in the assembly of the car is permissible, however, a majority of the work should be completed by the Scout.

The following are rules and regulations for the race:

Once the car is turned in for registration, there will be NO additional adjustments made to the car. The cars will be placed on staging tables and will only be handled by the scouts when it is their turn to race. All graphite or teflon lubrication should be applied PRIOR to arriving at Frawley Hall. As cars are registered, they will be assigned a car number in sequential order. Scouts will be racing amongst all ages, dens and rank.

Additionally, all racers must comply with the following race rules which are excerpted from the OFFICIAL GRAND PRIX PINEWOOD DERBY GUIDEBOOK:

  1. All cars must pass inspection during registration to qualify for the race. The inspection points are as follows:
    1. The car must have been made in the current scouting year (school year 99-00).
    2. The width of the car shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
    3. The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
    4. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.
    5. Axles, wheels, and body wood shall be as provided in the kit.
    6. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
    7. The car shall not ride on any kind of springs.
    8. Any details added must be within length, width, and weight limits.
    9. The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
    10. No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
    11. The official car number will be assigned at registration and will be clearly placed on the car.
  2. Each heat will be announced. Drivers will report to the starting line and place their cars on the track. All other people must remain behind the barrier.
  3. The starter will make sure the cars are on the track properly and then will start the race.
  4. The starter and the drivers will then report to the finish line to record the results.
  5. If judged electronically, results will be as determined by the timing mechanism. In the event the race is judged manually, the car whose nose is over the finish line first is the winner. Place spotters will select the 2nd and 3rd place winner.
  6. If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc., the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses the race. If on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time but without the disqualified car.
  7. When the results of each heat are recorded, the cars will be returned to the staging table and the drivers will return to their seats.
  8. Each car will run in three heats and will run against different cars on each of the three lanes of the track, The winner will be the car with the lowest total time, if the race is judged electronically.
  9. Winners will be announced the night of the race. Awards will be presented at the Blue and Gold dinner in February. Awards will be presented for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
  10. Finally, The most important rule:
  11. Do Your Best!
