Mayes County Patch

What will wake you during the night to warn you of an approaching storm? Sirens are outdoor warning devices. Friends and neighbors may be asleep as well. If you stay up all night, will be you be fit for work the next day?

A Weather Radio with a Specific Area Messaging Encoder will be the answer to your problem. A radio of this type will warn you about ALL weather events rather than just tornado, as well as Shelter-In-Place announcements and other public information notices from your area Civil Emergency Managment offices.

Specially designed receivers allow the National Weather Service to issue a warning for a specific geographical area. These receivers cost about $50. They are available at Radio Shack in Pryor. Also, the National Weather Service offers an information page on buying weather radios.
When you get your weather radio, you will need the SAME code for the area. These codes may be found at http://www.weather.gov/nwr/CntyCov/nwrOK.htm or by calling 1-888-697-7263. You will also wish to know what channel to tune your radio. Two transmitters serve Mayes County. One is in Tulsa on 162.55 mHz while the other, on 162.50 mHz, is near Grove. Both of these channels can be heard by using a radio scanner.
