Shamrocks has always been based in Brisbane’s western suburbs, true to the club’s foundation name of “Wests” in 1983. Over the past decade training grounds have included the Jindalee Recreational Reserve (1998-2004), Powenyenna Oval, Chelmer, (2005-2007), and in 2008 training was at Dunlop Park, Corinda. The 2009 training home will soon be announced.
The oval is over the picturesque Walter Taylor Bridge from Indooroopilly, surrounded by a bend of the Brisbane River, between the Chelmer and Oxley train stations. Shamrocks train Wednesday nights 7pm-9pm from February to September.
Aborginal names and Irish history abound across the Shamrocks' western suburbs: Powenyenna means "magpie"; Indooroopilly means either "running water" or "gully of leeches"; Jindalee means "bare hills"; Corinda is of Aboriginal origin, but its meaning unknown. The first European owner of the land including Dunlop Park was Arthur Hunter Palmer, born in Armagh, Ireland. He was a member of parliament 1866-1881 and for four of those years was Premier of Queensland.

officially opened in 1990 by the Irish Ambassador to Australia, and visited
in 1992 by the president of the Republic of Ireland, Mary
Robinson. Lights making night matches possible for the first time were erected in 2003, thanks to grants from the Irish GAA and the Queensland Government, when the QGFA executive was president Nicholas Carpenter, secretary Harold Peacock, and treasurer Seamus Sullivan. The ground was the site of the 1990, 1998 and 2005 Australasian Gaelic Games.
Queensland Gaelic Football shield, league, and championship matches are played from March to September. There is often also a social summer league. Telephone 3372 2181 for match-day pitch conditions.
Willawong is Aboriginal for "junction of two creeks".
