Alexandre Paiva vs. Renzo Gracie
Alexandre Paiva began training in Jiu-Jitsu in around 1983 with Professor Jacaré, in the Master Jiu-Jitsu Ipanema academy. Training about 8 hours a day, he began to stand out among students, and began to participate in competitions as a blue belt. Recording many victories early in his career, he was known for finishing nearly all of his opponents with submissions. Alexandre was so dedicated to his Jiu-Jitsu training, that in addition to his regular training at the Master Jiu-Jitsu academy, every Wednesday he traveled to Botafogo to the Gracie Humaitá academy to train with Rickson Gracie.

In 1988, Alexandre suffered a serious injury that forced him to stop training for 2 years. He eventually had to have surgery of the cervical column to correct the problem.

In 1991, Alexandre obtained his black belt from Jacaré, and began a new phase in his career. He was teaching in Jacaré's academy, as well as the Equipe 1 academy, and the Clube Federal academy.
