Fabio Gurgel
Fabio Gurgel is a 3rd Degree blackbelt under Jacaré. Part of the Alliance Jiu-Jitsu team, he has a rich tournament background. His accomplishments include:
- Two time World champion (96-97)
- Three time Brazilian champion (94-95-96)
- Two time Brazilian team competition champion (95-96)
- Two time Rio de Janeiro champion (94-95)
- Two time São Paulo champion (95-96)
- World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team Champion (98)
Fabio Gurgel began training at the age of thirteen.
At the age of fifteen, he got his blue belt and started competing, being a runner up in his first Rio de Janeiro jiu-jitsu championship. In 1986, got his first title starting a very successful career. At the age of seventeen, got his purple belt and got recognized as a young talent. Having as a big inspiration and idol grand master Rickson Gracie, Fabio evolved very quickly and at the age of nineteen got the black belt from Jacaré, being his first student to reach this level. He is the only athlete to obtain three titles in the Brazilian Championship as a black belt and four medals in the World championship, being two golds, and two silver. Fabio is a highly reguarded competitor and instructor in Brazil. Many champions come to São Paulo to train with Fabio in his academy. He also keeps a busy seminar schedule around the world. In his Vale Tudo debut he destroyed Dennilson Maia with punches from the mount at a Jiu-Jitsu versus Luta Livre event. He competed in the UFC against Jerry Bohlander and lost by Judges Decision. He defeated Michael Pacholik with punches from the guard. He fought Mark Kerr for 30 min. in Brazil, but lost when the doctors would not let him continue because of a swollen eye. Mark Kerr stated that if he and Gurgel been the same weight, Fabio would have won. Fabio is now looking to get back into the UFC and prove himself to those who don't already know that he is a great fighter.
