| "The Idea takes shape" |
| The Federation Starbase Project was a major step forward
for Starfleet. These gigantic structures were to provide a stoping point and repairs to ships on long hauls.
With the expansion of Federation space, these bases would become a 'home away from home' and the first line
of defense against attack. |
| "Simple Beginings" |
| The Starbase Development Project was given birth in 2342
and one of the first and well-known of these was Starbase 74, commissioned in 2358. Since its completion, 2
other bases have been commissioned with a furthur 2 currently in the early stages of development. One of the
newly completed starbases was given the designation, Starbase 111 and the name Starbase McCoy. |
| "The Name" |
| The base was called Starbase McCoy, in honour of the
lifetime dedication of Starfleets best know medical doctor, Dr. Leonard H. McCoy. The adventures of the
U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 under the command of Captain James T. Kirk have become legends. The contribution
made to medicene and the bravery of this man was the main drive behind the Starbase's name. |
| "The Construction" |
| Construction began in 2358 and was finally completed in
2375. The starbase is in orbit around the 3rd planet in the Sol System. After the sneak attack from the Breen,
one which Earth was not ready for, Starfleet command needed to increase Earth's defenses. At the time of the
attack, Starbase McCoy had been approved and was nearing completion. It was therefore unable to help defend
Earth in its time of need. After the attack, its completion was made a priority by Starfleet Command. |
| Its
commissioning ceremony took place in 2376, when the Tobias returned from a major Starfleet mission with 9 other
ships against the Breen. On board was Fleet Admiral T'Keris who oversaw the stations opening. Hailed as
the most powerful Starbase ever envisaged, McCoy is based on the Federation Space dock design, complemented
with numerous defensive upgrades with the latest in Starfleet technology. During the commissioning ceremony,
the Starbase's purpose was summed up by Rear Admiral Hunt as 'Once on-line, she will be Earths last line of
defense, and her best hope for survival'. |
| "The Assignment" |
| With the base requiring a commander, the list was
finally narrowed down to one man, Captain Michael Hunt, commanding officer of the U.S.S. Tobias NCC-75487.
On accepting the post as starbase commander, he was promoted to Rear Admiral for his dedicated Starfleet
Service. He was again awarded later that year and promoted to Vice Admiral. |
| "Command" |
| In 2377, for his dedication to
starfleet and his commitment to the Federation, Vice Admiral Michael
Hunt, commanding officer of the U.S.S. Tobias NCC-75487 and Starbase McCoy was given command of the fleet
and promoted to full Admiral. |
| With the new responsibilites
that came with the promotion, the first officer of the Tobias, Commander Strife was given a
deserved promotion to Captain and command of the U.S.S. Tobias NCC-75487. |
