WATERFALLS OF NOVA SCOTIA

Last Updated - Jan. 8, 1998

Most people who live in Nova Scotia, Canada, know of Nova Scotia's exceptionally beautiful and numerous waterfall sites. And those who don't, well here's your chance to see Nova Scotia's beautiful hidden watery treasures, which are definitely a must-see!!

A special waterfall will be featured here every month, so come back often if you want to see more of Nova Scotia's hidden beauty!

This page is best viewed with a Netscape-like browser with a resolution of 800-600. However I've tried to make this page as text-browser-friendly as possible.

WATERFALLS OF THE MONTH:

ECONOMY FALLS

Location: Glooscap Trail, Colchester County, Nova Scotia.

Directions: 12 km west (on Route 2) of the Bass River community, until you see a sign announcing the falls, there turn right, and drive approx. 7 km on the gravel road, until you get to the clearing on the right side where you may leave your car, and start walking.

Trail Rating: moderate

Trail Length: 0.75 km

This page begins with sort of a tribute, because the waterfalls I will be describing this month, the Economy Falls, have recently collapsed. I haven't been to the site yet, but intend to go there and find out just what happened, and take some pictures.

When these falls were still 'up-and-running', they were a protected waterfall site, with a stabilized trail leading straight to the falls, so stairs and benches are put on the trail, just in case you get tired. ^_^ However, besides these 'effects of civilization', you still feel as if you've left the civilized world behind by the time you get to the trail. The forest through which the trail leads is lovely. You'll have to walk about 1 km on a nice, flat trail, then you will have to descend a long flight of stairs, that lead all the way down to the base of the gorge.

The waterfall itself has outstanding geological features, like the fault from which the waterfall descends. The falls are approx. 19 meters high, water splashing into a basin at the bottom of the falls. And if you look closely, you may see that the curved shape of the falls, with its reflection in the water, makes a crescent-moon shape, like in the above picture. ^_-

Now the location is still as beautiful as ever, but sadly, the winter has taken these beautiful falls its victim. Now the basin at the bottom of the falls is filled with rocks from the above fault, with water still flowing over them... The waterfalls themselves have been ruined, but this is still a great site to see the real power of Nature.
