I want to tell you about the great club that I'm a part of. THE ROWING CLUB is a whaleboat rowing club based at Embarcadero Cove Marina in Oakland, California. We have women's and coed competitive team rowing as well as a recreational rowing program.
Our objectives are:
To provide a positive instructional environment to introduce and refine skills of team cooperation, sportsmanship and seamanship.
To conduct supportive and challenging competition.
Members learn boat handling and navigational skills; receive a full body workout while learning about Bay Area water sports.
The club dues are $150 annually. Dues pay for the following:
- Insurance - covers the boat, equipment loss (oars, oar locks, life jackets, etc.), the trailer, other's property damage, liability and injury to our rowers and others.
- Maintenance - we sand and varnish all the wood on the boat twice a year, including oars and foot stretchers , and wax the exterior. We have the boat's bottom refinished and repainted every two or three years.
- Competitive Rowing - We currently have a competitive women's team, Las Sirenas, and a competitive coed team, Team X (formerly the Privateers). Competitive rowers must make a commitment to participate twelve weeks before the first race. They must also participate in rowing and/or towing the boat to the location of the races and returning to our berth at Embarcadero Cove Marina. Each team is responsible for their own uniforms, stationary, etc. We typically do four spring season races and two fall season races each year. The entry fees for these races are paid for out of the club treasury.
We have two race seasons:
Spring: February - June
Fall: September - December
Some of the major competitions and locations include:
Alcatraz * San Francisco Bay
Oakland Cup * Oakland Estuary
Coast Guard Challenge * Coast Guard Island
Bridge to Bridge * Golden Gate to Bay Bridge
Tahoe Regatta * King's Beach, North Lake Tahoe
The Head of the Estuary * Oakland Estuary
The Master's Invitational * Alameda
