My name is Tim Shuttleworth, and I am from Reading in the UK.

This summer (August-September 2001) I joined the Child2child building project in Nairobi, Kenya. We set out to build a centre for street children to be run by a Kenyan lady.
 

 
This site is a picture-based log of the whole building phase of the project, both my 3 weeks and the other 3 1/2 weeks.
 
 

Apologies to those who hoped to follow the progress with "pictures on this site to be updated daily!" Things don't always go as planned - the 35km distance to Nairobi and the speed and availability of internet access meant only a single modest update was possible during my 3 weeks. The boss said I had to work, after all...

Week 1 - Starting out On 14th August 2001 the first 12 of the team set out from the UK.
Week 2 - Foundational stuff 21st August. Pouring the foundations and starting to build the footings.
Week 3 - Celebrations ... 28th August. Floors and a pause to celebrate the start.
Week 4 - Building the walls up 4th September. Progress on outer walls, and casting of some ring beam above windows.
Week 5 - To roofing and beyond! 11th September. With completion of the ring beam, and starting the roof.
Week 6 - Putting the lid on it! 18th September. Roof on, doors in. Other tidying up work.
The UK team! Many people from the UK took time out to join up for part or all of the building
The Ugandan team! Six fine fellas from Uganda came over for 6 weeks.
The Kenyan team! Locals were grafted in to build and assist. Also full group picture.
