Special Interests

A sample inventory model, using JavaScript, for carrying out the calculations.

The Newspaper Seller's Problem. The paper seller buys the papers for $ each and sells them for $ each. Newspaper not sold at the end of the day are sold as scrap for $ each. Newspaper can be purchased in bundles of 10. Thus, the paper seller can buy 50, 60, and so on. There are three types of newsdays, "good," "fair," and "poor," with probabilities of , , and . The distribution of papers demanded on each of these days is shown below:

Demand Probability Distribution
Demand
GoodFairPoor

The problem is to determine the optimal number of papers the newspaper seller should purchase M*. To accomplished this, inventory theory will be used. Also, the optimal expected relevant total cost E(C*T)1 will be calculated.

M*
E(C*T)

The profits are given by the following relationship:

Profit=revenue
from sales
_cost of
of newspapers
+salvage from sale
of scrap papers
=$

1E(C*T) is the optimal expected shortage plus holding cost.
Note: This requires Netscape Navigator Version 2.0b2.

In a Nutshell

The concept of hypertext was first introduced by Theodor (Ted) Holm Nelson in 1964. Nelson used the term to describe documents that can be accessed in any manner without the need to sequentially read through them.
