| This is awesome, SETI@Home is one of the largest distributed computing projects ever undertaken. SETI is the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. It is a private non-profit organization that utilizes radio telescopes such as the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico, to montior radio signals from outer space and search for any signs of extraterrestrial intelligence in them. SETI@Home is an extension of the main SETI project. The basics of it are as follows: You download a small program that can either act as a screensaver or run all the time in the background, not disturbing your work. Either way, when your computer's processor isn't operating to its full capacity, the SETI@Home program uses this extra processing power to analyze chunks of data that it downloads from SETI servers. Once it's finished, it returns the results. If you choose the proper settings, this can all be done without you noticing a thing. Plus, if your computer happens to be the computer that analyzes the first signal to be detected by the human race that originated from a source of intelligence from beyond then you go down in history.
