Midwest SOARRING

Midwest Save Our Ancestors Remains & Resources Indigenous Network Group

We are one people, joined together across the generations...

Midwest Save Our Ancestors Remains & Resources Indigenous Network Group (Midwest
SOARRING) is a Native-based, not-for-profit organization formed in 1994 to facilitate the
repatriation of Native American ancestral remains and burial goods, to work for the
preservation of the burial and sacred sites in Illinois and the Midwestern states, and to protect
and conserve the natural environment. While thousands of the ancestors' remains are still
held in museums and government agencies, land development continues to expand,
threatening more burial and sacred sites with destruction. Midwest SOARRING has a close
working relationship with a network of individuals among Native Nations and U.S.
government agencies to facilitate protection of these sites and communication among all
parties in the interest of preservation.

Midwest SOARRING Dissolution—Transfer to Midwest SOARRING Foundation plus New Archives Department Opened

Midwest Save Our Ancestors Remains & Resources Indigenous Network Group AKA Midwest SOARRING has been dissolved by over 2/3 vote of the members attending the Annual Members' Meeting on October 21, 2000. All services, memberships, events, etc., have been tranferred to its sister organization, formed in 1996, Midwest SOARRING Foundation. (See story from Wings 22 (final issue), entitled A Fond Farewell—And The Next Step.)

Midwest SOARRING had reached its peak goal on October 1, 2000—land for reburial. A deed for 5.9 acres in Peoria, Illinois, was given to the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska on that date, and the 6-year search for land had ended. The work of repatriation and burial site protection will not and cannot end here, however, the history of Midwest SOARRING can now be closed.

Several Midwest SOARRING Board members will move on to work directly with the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, and continue to monitor unmarked burial site disturbances and related concerns. The new Board for Midwest SOARRING Foundation will continue fulfilling the goals of its own mission statement:

to educate the public about concerns related to protecting Native American ancestral remains, burial sites and goods, cultural and sacred sites, and resources via avenues such as lectures and the construction of a Native American model prehistoric village and cultural learning center. (See story from Wings 22 (final issue), entitled Midwest SOARRING Foundation—A Running Start.)
