NUTRITION FOR THE BRAIN AND NERVOUS SYSTEM
NUTRITION FOR THE BRAIN AND NERVOUS SYSTEM
The brain and the nervous system have special nutritional requirements unlike that of the rest of the body. It is important to be familiar with these needs and to fulfill them.
- Brain
- The brain is the control center of the body. Its primary function is to send and receive messages through the activity of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are electrical signals that send information to and from parts of the body. Other functions of the brain are memory, mental acuity, cognition, and human emotions.
- Reflex Center
- The brain is comprised of two parts: the cerebrum and the cerebellum. The cerebrum is responsible for intelligence. The cerebellum controls all motor activity and acts as a reflex center for coordination and precise maintenance of equilibrium.
Healthy brain function is affected by:
- poor diet
- lack of exercise
- stress
- injury
- illness
- excessive alcohol and sugar intake
The following substances can aid in brain and nrevous system function:
- Phosphatidyl serine is essential to the function of all body cells. It has a great involvement in nerve cell function and is typically limited in the human diet.
- Gingko biloba helps maintain brain function, memory, and alertness by stimulating blood circulation in the brain.
- Gotu kola is useful to cell repair.
- Bilberrydestroys free radicals, strengthens capillaries, and increases bllod circulation to the brain. It also maintains night vision.
- Cat's claw inhibits the formation of amyloid plaque, which decreases the levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain.
- B vitamins promote a healthy nervous system, concentration, memory, and is necessary for the assimilation of amino acids and carbohydrates for brain function.
- Folate, a B vitamin, is helpful for good concentration, memory, and mental and emotional health.
- L-glutamine is essential to cerebral function.
- L-tyrosine is needed for the production of key neurotransmitters.
