a.k.a. Everyman's guide to the destruction of the tv series "Profiler".
In this list are assembled all the mistakes Stephen Kronish and Co., "Profiler's" present production team managed to pull off in the third and fourth season concerning the series' main character, Sam Waters, and a few other wholly unbelievable events. As you can see, there's a plethora of them. Is it me or does it seem to you too that this production team never really gave a damn about their series? I would just like to note that though I know the first production team made mistakes and continuity errors, they were never as significant as the following ones and that is why I chose to enlist all the ludicrous mistakes á la Kronish and Co. If you work for TPTB or are one of them, take notes!!
Twelve telltales which reveal Kronish and Co. never bothered to watch the first two seasons:
Sam's convenient amnesia about Jack's disguise in "Coronation"
In the end of "Root Of All Evil" Sam has Jack at gun point and she sees his disguise, the mask he's wearing. So why doesn't the team at the beginning of "Coronation" just arrange every guard to a lineup so she can identify Jack? He couldn't have thrown his disguise away because he wouldn't have had any security passes, other than for the guard he was impersonating.
In the episode "Ring Of Fire" after Jack has driven Sam, Chloe and Angel away from Angel's farm Bailey turns an old fire station into their new home. It has bullet proof glass and steel doors, not to mention that in every room of the house there is a camera. In addition to these safety precautions anyone who enters their house has to have an imprint of his palm taken in order to be granted access. I seriously doubt Sam would have agreed to giving Jack a clarification.
A quote from "I'll Be Watching You" (about Jack's message to Sam which he called to a radio station):
Sam: "Bailey, do we know where the call came from?"
A quote from "Coronation":
Bailey: "Sunday school, where was it, Sam, where's the school?"
A major mistake!! Not only did they get Sam's hometown wrong but also her religion. As it happens Baptist churches always have the word "Baptist" in them. And from the first quote you get the impression that Sam is Catholic. Well, at least they had the state right. In "I'll Be Watching You" when Bailey and Sam arrive with other agents at the church the location caption has Maryland in it.
Additional information from Tarrant: Thank you! :)
Witness the following quotes from "Coronation":
Lucas: "288 candles. There are 288 candles in this room, one for every month since I told you I'd take care of you, that Jesus and I would take care of you."
Sam's Sunday school teacher: "It was the day you were baptised. Your aunt tried to calm you down. You were always so headstrong, Samantha, even as a child. But when it was over, little Donnie Lucas put his arms around you and said - it was so precious, I never could forget it. He said 'Jesus and I will take care of you now'."
So, I guess we can add the lack of knowledge for basic division to the producers' shortcomings. 288 divided by twelve makes it twentyfour years, the duration Lucas claims he has looked after Sam. From what I gather Sam is in her late thirties, 37 - 39. Ahem... twentyfour years ago Sam would have been in the age of thirteen to fifteen. I don't know about you but I would sure as hell remember some boy putting his arms around and saying that he will take care of me in that age.
In the first season episode "Doppelganger" the VCTF looks into the crimes of a serial killer who was captured by Sam and Bailey six years ago. Sam visits the killer, named Arthur DeRhodes in prison. During that conversation DeRhodes mentions that the last time he saw Sam was during the time Sam and Tom were about to walk down the aisle. So the year they were married was 1990 or 1991. Examine the following line of Sam from "Sum Of Her Parts" (1999):
Sam: "Today is my anniversary. Tom and I would have been married twelve years."
Doesn't add up, now does it? Further proof that TPTB have never heard of mathematics.
Read the following quote of Sam's from "Coronation", which she says to Chloe in reference to crushes:
Sam: "I guess the first person I ever really had a crush on was your dad. Turned out not to be a crush at all."
Fair enough. We know about Sam and Tom's long history together from the episode "Old Acquaintance", where one of Sam's college friends points out that Sam had Tom at the time of their graduation in the early eighties. The aforementioned line makes sense. What is contradictory to this is the dialogue between Grace and Sam in "Monster Within" about Sam's old Quantico friend:
Grace: "So... how long have you known Michael?"
See where I'm getting at? From what I gather Sam never at any point broke up with Tom and consequently this whole Michael twist is right out of character for Sam. She loved Tom too deeply to act in this way. The amazing things you could pick up from watching the previous seasons!
In the beginning of the first season Sam mentions to Coop that her daughter is seven years old. So that would make Chloe born in 1989. Then, in the second season the episode "Ties That Bind" informs us that Chloe is eight by that time. And come the third season and low and behold, in the episode "Three Carat Crisis" Sam says to one of the kidnappers that she bought earrings as Chloe's present for her eleventh birthday. Hm... three years in a year. Boy does time pass fast!
Wait, there's more! So, Chloe's supposed to be eleven in Kronish's seasons. But in "Reunion II" Chloe tells Jack that she was three when her father died, and we all know that Tom was killed in 1993. This would make Chloe nine during the episode but as we all know, she is eleven, Some people just don't seem to be able to retain logic and consistence.
The following transaction about Jack is taken from "Reunion I".
Bailey: "This would have been around 8 years ago."
Okay... what the TPTB seem to have forgotten is the alienated relationship of Sam and her father. In "Breaking Point" Sam tells Bailey how she grew up with Angel and how Angel and her mother are Sam's family. To make matters even better, the estranged relationship between Sam and her father Walter was a theme TPTB themselves explored in several episodes during the third season, for crying out loud!!! So how could Walter possibly tell Jack about Sam when it is very obvious that he was never there for her during her childhood?? The lazy asses just needed a quick exit for the series' main character. Sadly it made them look like the idiots they are.
The following quote snippet is a direct follow-up to the last dialogue:
Mr Anderson: "I thought about introducing him. I'm her father. I wanted her to be happy. Seemed they had so much in common."
This does it. If the meeting between Walter and Jack took place eight years ago, it was in 1991 and TOM WAS ALIVE AT THE TIME for the love of God!!! Would Sam's father really not know she was at least engaged, if not already married to Tom then?? And even so, a relationship between Sam and Tom was already there in the beginning of the eighties. There's only one word I'd use about TPTB's this stroke of genius: repulsive. :(
When Jack takes Chloe to Tom's grave in the episode "Reunion II" it seemed like they did not leave Atlanta, did it? Somebody forgot to tell TPTB that Sam, Tom and Chloe lived near Richmond, Virginia at the time of Tom's death. In the second season episode "Ties That Bind" Jack sends Jill after Tom's parents for trying to take Chloe away from Sam. Jill was impersonating Sam and tried to board the same plane as Sam's in-laws and the plane's destination was Richmond. And from the aforementioned episode the knowledge of Sam, Tom and Chloe living close to Tom's parents is obtained too. Read the next dialogue between Chloe and a psychologist:
Psychologist: "Do you like going to visit your grandma and grandpa?"
Sam: Was it just me or was that whole Paul storyline very out of character for Sam? At least what happened in "Home For The Homicide". When Paul comes to decorate the tree Chloe isn't even around. In my opinion Sam would never do anything that would let Chloe feel so uncomfortable that she would feel the need to leave. According to the former producers Sam was so devoted to her daughter that she was prepared to break up with Coop for the fear of Chloe getting close to a man who might leave. How's that Paul storyline sound now?
Bailey: I must admit that Bailey getting back together with Janet was a stroke of genius! The Bailey we knew from the first and second season was a man who was still hurting of his failed marriage but ultimately knew that it was truly over between him and Janet. So in my opinion the Janet storyline was plainly unconvincing and a lazy attempt from TPTB to create some character development for Bailey.
John: This has got to be the most gross characterisation of TPTB (not including Rachel): the philandering side of John that was depicted with the utmost attention in the third season. They also characterised him as a moron. Remember the subjects falling in a void line from "Monster Within"? If TPTB had watched the second season in particular they would have observed that John was never the philanderer he was supposed to be according to them and had a brain and a heart. Here's the evidence:
"It Cuts Both Ways": when Sam and John are at Jill's crime scene and Sam sees the mask of her face on the victim she asks if it was Ebenezer Scrooge who was shown his body by the gods. John replies that it was his grave and there weren't two of them.
"Root Of All Evil": at the hotel fire scene John is distracted by the bodies and the thought of what had happened in the room. He is visibly distraught and he and Marcus keep on talking about the effect of the incident on John throughout the scene.
Wow, so you really thought that TPTB could not possible outdo themselves in their stupidity? You were wrong!! What about the fact that Sam has never been mentioned in the episodes following her departure? Afterall Sam was only the main character of the series who the viewers had grown to care for and love and who was "Profiler". What makes matters even more absurd is the fact that Bailey who admitted to being in love with her has not made even the slightest reference to her. Well, she was only his best friend. But no, we couldn't possibly see Bailey or any of the VCTF members missing her, no.
Honestly, I have yet to witness another prime time tv series in which the main character leaves and is not mentioned thereafter even once. It is as if Sam Waters had never even existed. Take "ER" or "NYPD Blue" for example. In both tv series major character have left, eg Doug Ross and Bobby Simone, and they have been mentioned on numerous occasions after their departure. And these two tv series don't even have one main character but instead are multicharacter driven. Now how does that make Profiler look when its main character seems to vanish from the face of this earth?
I have chosen not to step into the ridiculousness of the TPTB's decision to continue the production of the series after Sam left. The final thing I wish to say on this matter is that I will watch "Reunion I" and "Reunion II" and after that Profiler without Sam will hold no interest for me.
Do you have any comments you want to express? Another act of stupidity by TPTB you feel must be included in this list? Any interesting stories you want to publish? Contact me at plnpr@sci.fi and make your take on the matter known!
Thank you for your interest in TPTB's ludicrousness! Keep profiling with the real Profiler of the first and second season.
