My Personal Comments
James Stewart was known not to sign any autographs for about 10 or 15 years when I sent out my request in December 1996 (that's at least what I know). I just thought:"Hey...you've got nothing to loose !", sent him a very long and genuine letter, and asked for an autograph. You might think...his secretary sent the letter, so she might have signed the photo instead of Mr. Stewart, but I'll tell you why I'm absolutely sure he really read my letter, signed this photo and directed his secretary to send me this letter: After I received this autograph I told an other admirer of Mr. Stewart about my success, and he used the same adress, I used to get this autograph. He just received a letter from the same secretary, saying, Mr. Stewart doesn't send out any autographs. Well, he knew Mr. Stewart sent one to me, so he wrote a new letter to his secretary, and asked why a friend received one, and he not. The secretary of Mr. Stewart wrote back again, and wrote that he usually never signs anything through the mail, and that she really can't tell why he made an exception (when he sent one to me !). It would have been much easier for the secretary to just send him a photo of Mr. Stewart, she signed, to let him believe, Mr. Stewart signed it - so the autograph I received must be originally signed by Mr. Stewart, and he must have read my letter ! I'm so happy, he really read what I wanted to let him know since I have first seen him in a movie, and his autograph has a very special place in my collection. Unfortunately the scan is a bit dark, and he signed with a black pen on the dark grey part of the photo, but on the original his signature is very good visible.
