My ancestors, Joseph Stanley and
son John Stanley, as far as we know were from Monroe Co., VA (WV). They may have come from another location to Monroe but if so, we do not know where. In 1819 the first record for them shows up as the marriage record between John and his wife Mary Elizabeth Ellison. In the 1820 and the 1830 Monroe census, both households of Rev. Joseph and John appear. Sometime before 1840 both families show up in Cabell Co., VA (WV). I believe around 1835 to 37 both families came to Cabell. In 1837 and maybe as early as 1835, the Reverend Joseph's name starts to appear on the marriage records in Cabell Co. and he continues to marry people until 1842 when his name no longer appears. He may have died around that time; he would have been in his 70s. New info has been found (12/29/2001)that places Joseph in the Salem Baptist Church. In old church records that I have found state that on the 10th of Aug. 1840, he and his wife joined this church. One year later the church gave Joseph a License to receive and baptize people anywhere in the bounds of the church and in another record in 1842 he was listed as a Moderator of a meeting. There is no further mention of Joseph in the records. No further info is available about Joseph or his wife at this time. John Stanley Sr. remarries after he comes to Cabell Co. in 1841 to Mary Elizabeth Mays (former Williams of Bedford Co., VA). Mary Elizabeth was the former wife of Larkin Mays of Amherst Co., VA. John's first and second wife had the same name which has confused many a researcher. It really gets confusing but here goes. John's daughter was Nancy Stanley who married Hamilton Mays. Hamilton was the son of John's second wife, Mary Elizabeth Mays. So John's second wife was both mother-in-law and step-mother to Nancy Stanley and John was the same to Hamilton Mays. Think about it a while, you will figure it out. John and Elizabeth Mays had no children together. They are listed in the 1850 and 1860 Cabell Co. census but John is not listed after that. I have been unable to find a death record but assume he died in the 1860s. Family tradition states he was buried in the Old Barboursville Cemetery but this has not been proven as yet. To date, I have found six children by John's first marriage to Mrs. Ellison. They are listed below. I am looking forward to finding out more info on the two men and I hope that those of you who are reading these notes will provide me with some additional info. I also hope you have learned something while you are here. All of this info is backed up by actual records. Special thanks to Mark Henderson who has helped with the research on these men. Ed Knight |
