Mr. Hybarger crossed over the dividing line of modern education. Before he left French, and during his regime, education was a privilege. Using someone elses money for my education was indeed a privilege. Now, after 1958, it changed to a right. Discip
ine has decreased and education has become what it is today. Mr. Hybarger certainly understood how to discipline. I'll never forget the day Bob Walker came down the halls with the heel of his shoe off and the nails striking the floor. Mr. Hybarger grabb
d his ear and he apologized to the entire school over the speaker. My wife taught 30 years and recently retired. Although her retirement was brought on by health reasons, the chaotic nature and lack of any discipline in today's schools makes us remember
how it was.
Thanks Mr. Hybarger for my education (and we even had him at Lamar!).

The most amazing thing about Mr. Hybarger was that he knew every kid in the school. Even more amazingly at a 1993 (35 year reuion) he still prided himself on knowing everyone there who attended FHS. One non-FHS wife even tried to trick his memory by askin
if he remembered her.

D.L. Hybarger was the most inspirational teacher I ever had. He was totally committed to my education as a teacher and as a person. Our friendship extended many years into my adulthood. He visited me several times in Nacogdoches on his way to Longview.
My children knew him when they were small and always enjoyed his great sense of humor, just as everyone who knew him did. I haven't seen him in a couple of years, only talking to him on the phone occasionally, but he was incredibly important to me as I w
s growing from a young girl to an adult. I still have the presents he gave my children upon their births. $10 bills with a picture of him taped on it. What a character!! I'm glad he knew how much I loved him and how instrumental he was in my life. I

Although Mr. Hybarger was no longer at French by the time I attended, it seems he was always a present "name" in our household. I suppose it was because we both lived so close to French High (on French Road) and because my mother was a school teacher and
very active in all the BISD politics.
My best memories of him come from college, as we were both members of the same Pike fraternity. I remember seeing him at the first "rush" party I went to the summer after graduating French and thinking "Oh no! He's going to tell my parents I'm drink
ng beer." Instead, he recognized me and welcomed me with that big, warm Delmas smile. That night, I got to hear for the first time his famous rendition of "Why Firetrucks are Red!"
A couple of years later, while he was on the city council, he got the city to sell a decommissioned, 1940 something, pumper to the fraternity. I can still remember driving it to go play softball; or around the campus to Gray and Gentry Halls, just t
see if any girls wanted to cruise down to Happy Burger for a coke or burger. What fun! Its still the only firetruck I've ever driven. Thank you, Delmas.
In 1974, I hosted a fraternity reunion party at an apartment in Houston. About 30 something former Lamar students attended. Guess who dorve all the way from Beaumont to spend a couple of hours with "his kids." What a guy!
We will all miss you much; but, how lucky we were to have known you. Phi Phi.

Although Mr. Hybarger had gone on to 'bigger and better' by the time I got to French, I was fortunate to grow up across the street from him and 'the Hybarger' kids. I remember the house on the corner of Buffalo,(HONEST!) and Wilson with the only carport

going on war stories or memories of chasing pretty girls in Pineland. Just recently, I made sure to take my wife Ryland to Beaumont for a visit to make sure that she had met him and could have sweet memories of him to pass on to our children. Upon our a

My sister, Dianne, and I want to thank you all so much for the love and support you have given us these last few days. Your kind words and deeds have reinforced our belief that dad was a great man.
Everytime we thought we had one more task than we could bear, someone would step up and say, "Let me do that for you." What was unspoken was, "I want to do something personally to honor him." We were so grateful for the help and we couldn't have done i
without you. And you did it so beautifully! He would have been proud. You did it for him, but we were the ones who received the benefit of his legacy.
Dianne, Nancy and I all went to French and grew up thinking that French belonged to us and we to it. It was a special time in our lives and we owe it all to our dad. In private the tears have filled buckets, but in public we have had a grand old time.
hen I entered the funeral home in Beaumont it had the look - and the sound - of a high school reunion. Nothing but happiness, laughter and fond memories. That's just the way he wanted it. The orange and white flowers from the many different classes of
FHS graduates really touched my heart. I thank you for that thoughtfulness.
Everyone thinks their father is the best, but I hope you'll agree with us if we think it's more than just familial pride when we say that Delmas Lee Hybarger was something special.

Diane, Chuck, Mrs. Hybarber and Families
Even though I saw all of you at the funeral home and the funeral, I would like to tell you in writing how special everyone thought Mr. Hybarger was. He was like our "school Daddy." He will be greatly missed.

I think I have known Mr. Hybarger all my life. He was my principal at French Elementary and in high school and I met him again as a professor at Lamar. His personality never changed. He always seemed to be in a good mood.

Anyone that ever went to FHS, had to be aware of Mr. Hybarger and the influences he had on French, even after he went on to other endeavors. In the field of human relations, he was an icon that we could model futures after. He was one of the special peo
le that God gave us who truly loved the his profession and loved all "his kids". God Bless and give you faith and courage to endure your loss and appreciate the loving respected Father he was. With our deepest sympathy, Ronny and Barbara Chase

Mr. Hybarger was the one that inspired me to go into the education field. I spent 38 years in education and hope that I made as much of an impact on young people's lifes as he was able to in his 48 years. He will be greatly missed.

I happen to be one of the few that had Mr. Hybarger as a princpal at Edward, French Jr. High
and French High School.
The class of 1947 had its 51st class renunion last
September and Mr. Hybarger attended.
His sight was not very good but he was as sharp as ever. I walked up to him and said I bet you do not remember me "The biggest headache you ever
had for 12 years" He knew immediately.
What a terrific person.

Mr. Hybarger was my principal at FHS 1954-56, and he was for most of us the spirit of the school. I cannot imagine my high school years apart from his presence. Then at Lamar he served as my academic advisor; without his inventiveness I should never hav
completed the teacher certification requirements. He knew his kids and made us feel good about ourselves. I've spent my adult life in teaching, in part because he trusted us and cared for us. Thanks and farewell, Mr. Hybarger. Wayne Cutler, Research Pr
fessor of History, University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
