          Approaching Gannet Rock by boat

Gannet Rock Light lies nine miles southeast of Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy. On Christmas Eve, 1831 a man kept a lonely vigil in that folorn and solitary spot in the Bay of Fundy. For the first time a ray of light gleamed from Gannet Rock- a beacon to warn ships that they were approaching one of the most dangerous areas in the bay. This rock is 300 feet long and looms out of the water, surrounded by dangerous rocks and ledges, which are covered at high water. It is Grand Manan's oldest lighthouse and was lit that Christmas Eve by Capt. Lamb of Saint John, New Brunswick.
