I have been performing genealogical research into my family history since I was ten years old when I received my first family tree from my Aunt Marie (McGowan) Bruce. She gave me a single sheet of paper that had written both front and back a brief summary of our families ancestery. This was the seed that sparked my interest and set the fire of my passion for the search for my ancestry. That was over twenty years ago. From that modest family tree of 15 people I now have over 1200 individuals in my family tree dating back to 1640. I have traced my families history to one continent and two countries. I have separated my family research by the surnames of my parents. As I began researching it soon became apparent that if I pursued every branch I would end up with an unmanagable and tangled root system, so I decided to limit my search to what I consider to be surnames of that existed to me in living memory. That is, anyone I knew and the ancestors they would have known as well. This takes me back four generations of names beyond which I follow only the patriarchial family names.
