The New England Girls' School

NEGS Shield

The New England Girls' School, or NEGS, as it is more commonly known, was established in 1895. Since that time, the school has grown in numbers, purpose, and in commitment to its motto: "Whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as unto God".

The school is situated on over forty hectares of landscaped parkland at the southern entrance to the city of Armidale, on the New England tablelands, in New South Wales. For over 100 years, NEGS has been educating girls from Australia and overseas to pursue careers in all fields of endeavour. The school has encouraged girls to be aware of the range of opportunities available to young women, and to realize that, with enthusiasm and application, nothing is impossible.

From its simple beginnings, NEGS has not only become the largest girls' boarding school in Australia, but also one of the finest independent schools in the country.

Overview

Academic courses at the school prepare girls for university entrance, offering a full H.S.C. curriculum as well as the unique Horsemasters Course, a specialised study of horse management and veterinary care.

Because the school is concerned with the development of confident and competent young women, there is a wide variety of activities available. Girls are encouraged to involve themselves in debating and public speaking, art, craft, drama, bush survival, cycling, gymnastics, dance and music. Of course, the Riding School, with its 65 horses and highly-trained staff, is an important recreational facility.

Over 85% of students gain university or college places. NEGS knows that this is by no means the only measure of educational quality. Above all, they strive to ensure that NEGS teaches its girls a commitment to learning and thus to view their school days as part of the ongoing educational process which life is all about.

Languages have long been an important strength in the curriculum, with French, German and Japanese all taught by highly qualified teachers, in most cases, native speakers. Every year NEGS girls enjoy the benefits of exchange programmes with sister schools in France, Germany, and Japan.

NEGS commenced the International Baccalaureate in 1993. This internationally recognised tertiary entrance qualification gives NEGS girls the choice of enrolling in universities in Australia as well as all over the world; 10,000 universities in all.

The New England Girls' School offers coaching for all skill levels in athletics, basketball, rowing, hockey, netball, gymnastics, shooting, softball, swimming, tennis and touch, as well as horse riding.

The school is blessed with excellent Facilities including an Arts and Crafts complex, a swimming pool, nine tennis courts, some of which have all-weather surfaces, four sports ovals, an equestrian arena and a fully staffed and equipped hospital.

The Chapel of St. Michael and All Angels, completed in 1937, plays an important role in school life. Many old girls choose it for their weddings and other important celebrations in their lives.

The opening of the extensions to the Aytoun-Young Resource Centre, which comprise a Senior Study Centre and Computer Rooms, represent the culmination of a long-standing commitment to computer education at NEGS. Girls from the Preparatory School to H.S.C. candidates study computers. Computers are an integral part of most academic subjects at the school.
