The Village is located five miles south of Fredericton in York County, adjacent the southwest boundary of the City of Fredericton, along Route 101. The region, of which New Maryland is part, is made up of rural agricultural and forest lands, giving the Village a distinctly rural character.

FIGURES: The population of New Maryland is approximately 4, 500 people. The Village has a Municipal Office, a Medical and Dental Clinic, 2 Pharmacies, a Post Office, a Recreation Centre, a Restaurant, two Grocery Stores, several Churches, a Service Garage and a new Elementary School (Kindergarten to Grade 6).

HISTORY: The village was named by a Mr. Arnold, a settler from Maryland, U.S.A. circa 1817. The area was first called Maryland but as early as 1825 it began to be referred to as New Maryland.

Among the historical anecdotes relating to New Maryland's history, one particular event stands out: New Maryland was the venue for the last duel in the province, the famous Street-Wetmore duel, in which George Ludlow Wetmore was killed, took place on the Segee farm on October 2, 182 1 . The encounter, which involved two prominent lawyers, emanated from controversy over the manner in which briefs were presented at the trial of a case in assessing damages on a writ of inquiry against the Sheriff, for false arrest and imprisonment.

According to one story, the two lawyers met outside the courtroom, where a heated argument developed into a quarrel involving professional ethics. Hot angry words by each were directed against the other's integrity and were climaxed by Street striking Wetmore. The following day an agent for Wetmore called upon Street at his home and presented him with a formal challenge to a duel. Attempts to settle the matter amicably failed.

The subsequent notoriety which ensued from the tragic fatality rocked legal and social circles and spread to Eastern Canada and the United States.
