Summer Camp 1997

Nine scouts from Troop 332 participated in the first week of summer camp at Camp Coker this summer. Those attending were Jason Allen, Jason Carter, Brett Fonteyne, Brian Disher, Travis Hildreth, Shawn Rielly, Chris Ruffalo,Sean Sutton, and Jonathan Space. They were supervised and encourgaged thoughout their week by Scoutmaster, Bruce Hildreth and Assistant Scoutmaster, Jim Space. Kevin Reed worked as a staff member along with his father, Mr. Bill Reed. The boys worked on merit badges ranging from reptile study to Boy Scout Life Guard. On Wednesday evening most of the parents of our campers drove to Camp Coker to visit with their sons, share a picnic supper, and to celebrate scouting by staying for the program put on by the camp staff. The entertainment for the evening was well organized and the funniest by far that most of the parents had ever seen on previous parent nights in years past. The Troop 332 family proudy watched as our own Sean Sutton and Becky Lewis were tapped out during the Order of the Arrow Ceremony. Becky was honored with good luck when the arrow broke as she was tapped out.

Order of the Arrow Camp 1997

Five of Troop 332's Scouts participated in the Order of the Arrow week of camp at Camp Coker during the last week of July. Andrew Bishop and Sean Sutton participated in the ordeal and became new Order of the Arrow members of the Santee Lodge. Already Santee Lodge members. Kevin Reed, Chris Ruffalo, and Johnathan Space attended the week of camp. Order of the Arrow membership is unusual in that those who are already members are not the ones to choose those who are invited to become new members. Voting is done by non members of the order. Scouts are inducted into the Order of the Arrow "not so much for what you have done, but for what you are expected to do." One of the purposes of the Order is "to recognize those campers - Scouts and Scouters - who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrent recognition."

The National Jamboree

One of Troop 332's scouts will be attending the National Jamboree this year. Jonathan Space will be asked to provide a report of his experiences for Troop 332 News when he returns.
