Yes I know the Coat of Arms spells Foot with an E and our name does not have
an E. Many families changed the spelling of their names after coming to this
country. Names like Clarke became Clark or Greene became Green.
I am a descendent of Pacal Foot who dropped the E from
the name.
THE FOOTE COAT OF ARMS
This is a condensation of the story behind the Foote Coat of Arms. It is
taken from FOOTE history and Genealogy, Volume I. The Coat of Arms was
supposedly granted to James Foote who was the father of Nathaniel Foote, the
immigrant who settled in Wethersfield Connecticut, in 1635. The Coat of Arms is
baaed on an act of Chivalry that saved the life of the future King of England,
one Charles the Second. He was a Stewart of Scotland. Another version says it
was James the First, also a Stewart. No matter which King or which battle, here is
one version. Charles the Second; before he was crowned, was engaged with the
forces of Parliament under Oliver Cromwell. This was the turbulent period of the
Civil War in England following the reign of the Stewarts. The forces of Charles
who were primarily Scots were utterly defeated, and most were either captured or
killed at the battle of Worchester which was fought on September 5, 1651. Charles
and a few of his men fled for their lives and ended up at Boscobel. It was there
that James Foote, who was an officer in Charles' army, took the future King,
clothed him in common garb, and persuaded him to hide in a large oak tree which
was located in or beside a clover field. He stayed in the tree for twenty four
hours and survived. Later following the collapse of the Commonwealth, he was
crowned as Charles the Second. In reward for saving hie life, Charles Knighted
James Foote . The Coat of Arms consists of a shield, which is silver, with a
clover leaf in the upper left, and a black chevron. The oak tree is above ths
Shield. The garlands of wild roses, with yellow blooms, which were growing in the
tree, are hanging above the Shield The wild grapes which also were in the
tree are shown below. The motto "Loyalty and Truth"is above the
oak tree.
