Quotation from Recollections of Woodville by Charles Smallwood"
Thomas [brother, Thom.J.P. Smallwood] read medicine,
practiced medicine 10 years in Woodville, then moved in the Indian
Woods, married Sally Ruffin and died September 1875. His wife died
about 1858, left several children.

Mr. John Ruffin's family consisted of his wife and several children; two
of his daughters died of scarlet fever.[Cella Winefred and Penolope Winborne]

Sarah married my brother Dr.Tom Smallwood and died on the farm.

Willie Ruffin married Dr.John Hill (of Wilmington) {on Sunday 23 Oct 1851 in the Jumping Run Church Woodville(per Charles Smallwood diary). Performing the ceremony was Joseph Blount Cheshire, the Rector of Calvary Church, Tabroro, NC. }They moved to Halifax County, near
Littleton, and there Dr. Hill died, leaving one daughter, Willie Ruffin.

Mrs. Hill
afterwards married Bob Hamlin, and after a few years they, separated.

Bob has since died and she is now living with her daughter, Mrs.
Tucker, in Henderson. {Willie R. Hill married W.H. Tucker.
 The son, John Ruffin, died young unmarried,
leaving his property to the son of my brother, John Ruffin Smallwood,
and the only good it ever did him was to ruin him.

Mrs Hamlin Dies at Home of Her Daughter Has Been Resident of Charlotte Three Years Funeral This Afternoon

Mrs Willie Ruffin Hamlin, for three years a resident of Charlotte, died yesterday morning at 6 oclock at the home of her daughter, Mr. W.H. Tucker, in Myers Park.
The funeral service will be conducted at the residence this afternoon at 3 oclock. The Reverend R.B.Owens, rector of the Church of the Holy Comforter [Episcopal] will officiate. Interment is in Elmwood Cemetery. Pallbearers are W.W. Robard, James W. Jones, J.M.Hill, F.H. Chamberlain, Thomas Haughton, Robert Lassiter, George M. Price and C. D. Taliaferro.
Mrs Hamlin was born in Bertie County in 1832 - she was 85 years old. She was the daughter of the late John Ruffin a prominent citizen of Bertie Countie. From 1846-49, Mrs. Hamlin attended St. Mary's school in Raleigh. She was important in the life of the Church of the Holy Innocence in Henderson where she lived for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. W.H. Tucker and grandchildren: Mrs. W.M. Chalmers of Toledo, Ohio, Dr. John Hill Tucker, Miss Julia Marie Tucker and Cadet Fred C. Tucker with the U.S. Cadet Flying Squadron.
