| Reverand William Y. M. WILKERSON was born in Lawrence County, now Sharp County, Arkansas in 1844. His father, Purvey, was born in North Carolina but was reared in Illinois. In 1836, Purvey moved to Arkansas, married and returned to Arkansas the same year. Six years later he returned to Lawrence (now Sharp County), AR. From about 1836 to 1863, Purvey farmed. In 1863, Purvey once again returned to Illinois and died three years later in Perry County, MO. on November 24, 1866. He was on his way home to Arkansas. At the time of his death, only two sons, William and Benjamin, are the only surviving children out of seven. His wife, a native of Sharp County, AR. resided there after his death. During the American Civil War, William enlisted first in the Third Missouri Militia and later in the Fourteenth Missouri Volunteers. During his enlistment in the Union army, he was wounded at Licking, MO.After the War of the Rebellion, he went to Franklin County, Illinois and attended High School for one year. Benjamin returned to Arkansas to farm and he also taught school. From the book, "A History Of The One-room Schools of Sharp County" ,it would appear that there were numerous teachers with the last name of WILKERSON. These individual were buried in the Bradford Cemetery. Also found Mack Wilkerson who was buried with his wife Ruth Dale Wilkerson in the Lone Jack cemetery near Smithville, Arkansas.
