The day this deer was shot was early in November and was quite warm. I was hunting in an area known as Edmund's bog. To get to this area I had to literally jump across the rocks at the Falls of Webb River and then walk about a mile to the hunting area. I started hunting at dawn and while sitting on a ridge watched a 4pt buck walk in. The buck was very small and I passed him up. At about 9:00 A.M. I started to still hunt the area. I came down off the ridge and went into a field with light cover and raspberry bushes all around. I was hot and frustrated due to the heat so I stepped up onto a fallen tree to rest and look around. I stood there for several minutes before jumping down about 2 feet to the ground. As soon as my feet hit the ground, this buck jumped up about 10 feet in front of me. I had not seen him but he was bedded down right in front of me. As soon as the deer was up so was my .35 Rem pump. I fired one shot striking him in the right ribcage area. The buck went down instantly. I moved up beside him and finished him quickly with a second shot to the neck. I was elated! I thanked the Maker for allowing me to harvest another magnificent Maine buck and then dressed the buck and started the long drag back to my vehicle. Crossing the river at the beginning of my hunt was easy, crossing it with a 150 lb buck was much more difficult. I slipped off the rocks as I was trying to float the deer across a "shallow" area. I suddenly found myself standing up to my neck in cold November Maine river water. I waded across the river as quickly as possible, pulling the buck behind me. I was thankful that the air temperature was so warm that day.
