St. Pius X Parish History

------------------------------------------

St. Pius X Parish began with a small congregation back in the early 1950's. The parish was formally established on 8 July 1955 by the authority of the Most Reverend Peter L. Ireton, Bishop of the Diocese of Richmond. First located at Little Creek Elementary School, because there was no adequate place to rent, the Parish looked for a more suitable location. The property on East Little Creek Road was unsettled at this time because Princess Anne County planned to run a highway through this area. On 4 September 1955, Masses at 7:00, 8:15 and 12:30 were held for the first time at the Little Creek Elementary School location. The total collection for this first full-day of liturgies was $171.00! The pastor at this time was Father Michael Giblin. His assistant was Father James Devaney. Supplies for the first services were given to the Parish by the Navy Chaplain at the Nofolk Naval Base and by Christ the King Parish.

The Parish grew by leaps and bounds despite its humble beginnings. Several pastors have served the Parish over the past 40 years, including Father Francis X. Toner (20 years), Father Duane Coan, Father Ronald Ruth, Father Frederick George, Father Anthony Rodriguez, Father Michael Duffy, Father William Dale, and Father Francis Muench. St. Pius X Parish now has over 1,368 registered families. Continuing to serve the community, the Parish emphasizes various ministries and service. The Parish members are devoted servants to Jesus Christ, the Lord, and strive to develop both spiritually and socially as one family in the Body of Christ.
