November 4, 1998
Discussion:The group met at a Sue & Jillian's house to discuss MRS. PIGGLE-WIGGLE, Betsy MacDonald and Hilary Knight, illustrator. The girls started with a project found in Family Fun about bringing books to life. The group briefly discussed what they liked about the book including their favorite cures and the ones they would like to try. They all concluded that the Never-Want-to-Go-to-Bedders Cure sounded like the best. The moms felt that the Answer-Backer Cure was best for them due to something that happens to 5th grade girls.
They were surprised how formal the book was including the mothers referring to one another in the formal Mrs. versus their first names. That lead to a discussion that in 1947 when the book was published we lived in a more formal time. We thought it would be helpful to learn more about the author and perhaps the time the book was written. This will be explored. There was also discussion on challenge words that one of the moms keeps in a literature log. Words that were brought up were bureau and impudent and words that have new meanings such as gnarly. Serious discussion centered on the only safe type of cure is one that can make us heathly as prescribed from a doctor and not homemade cures. This led to a further discussion on themes of the book that may not be viewed today as acceptable such as many children hanging out at a neighborly grandmothers home and the dangers of taking homemade cures.
One of the moms brought back information from the website which had 494 visitors to date and two e-mail replys from book clubs in Georgia and Virginia. The group felt that it would be helpful to connect with other book clubs.
Future Business: There will be no selection for the month of November. There is a heavier work load at school. The girls decided to wait until the December meeting to discuss their next selection. The moms recommended a super secret story pal and the girls loved it. They are to spend no more that $2 on each item and secretly leave it for their pals one time each week until the next meeting when it will be revealed the identity of their secret story pal. A profile was completed by each girl which included their favorite books, characters, candy, etc...
Jillian requested a future selection be MYSTERY ON MACKINAC ISLAND by Lois McLane (Illustrator), Anna W. Hale and a planned overnight trip in June when school gets out. All spring dates and reading selections will be discussed at the December meeting.
Next Selection:We're taking a month off.
Next Meeting: December 23, 4:00-6:00 pm, Audra & Lee's house
