Obituary for Samuel M. Cooke
Winston-Salem Journal May 28, 1936
Final Rites Friday for Samuel M. Cooke
Private funeral services for Samuel M. Cooke, 70, retired retail furniture dealer, who passed away
yesterday afternoon at his home on Manchester Street, will be held at the Manuel Funeral Home
Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. G. A. Stamper will conduct the services. Burial will follow in
Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call to view the body until 8 o'clock Friday morning.
Surviving are the widow; four sons, E. L., M. M., and C. C. Cooke of this city; S. W. Cooke of High Point;
two daughters, Mrs. H. S. Ethridge of Washington D.C., and Mrs. H.L. Kennerly of Arlington, VA;
22 grandchildren and one brother, Calvin A. Cooke of Clover S.C.
Note~Graves of Samuel and Ida were visited by Roberta and Glenn on May 24th 1998. Samuel's grave marker
lists him as being born on March 29, 1886, which we know is a 20 year mistake. He was married in 1888.

In the name of God amen. I Edward Cook of the county of Cleveland state of North Carolina,
same being sick & weak in body knowing it is appointed for all men once to die , do make &
ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give & recommend
my soul into the hands of almighty God that gave, and my body I recommend to the earth to be
buried decently Christian like burial at the discretion of my executors nothing doubting but at the
general resurection I shall receive the ….. ….. by the mighty ….. of God and as ……. Such worldly
estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life. I give demise & dispose of in the following
manners and form first I give and bequeath unto my …. Beloved wife Nancy Cook all my household
and kitchen furniture of any kind also one clock, all my stock horses, cattle, hogs, sheep also all my
farming tools of any kind also the tract of land I live on and all other lands I may be …… of at my
death and if the stock should become too numerous, more than my said wife needs it is my wish
that my executors should sell off said stock at twelve months credit and the money from the sale
of said stock to be put to the support of my said wife if needed after all my just debts are paid then
it is my request that at the death or marriage of my said wife, my lands and all other properties
of any kind should be sold at twelve months credit by my executors and the money all yet remaining
of my estate to be equally divided among all my children and wife in case she should marry.

Last Will and Testament of John Cook
March 9, 1798
In the name of God Amen, the ninth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand
seven hundred and ninety-eight-- I John Cook, of the County of Orange, State of North Carolina,
being sick and weak of Body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God
for the same, do make this my last Will and Testament in manner of form following; First, I give
and bequeath unto my beloved son Archibald Cook the land of plantation whereon he now lives
containing seventy acres as has been already surveyed; I give and bequeath unto my beloved son
David Cook the land of Plantation whereon he now lives with all the land on the South Side of the
road ; I give and bequeath to my beloved son Robert Cook the use of one bay mare to raise a
colt on which she is now with foal now and after the colt can be raised off he can have the colt
and return the mare to my estate; I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Sarah Cook the use
of all my lands and plantation with all my stock of all kinds with household furniture and all my
estate of what kind soever during her natural life, and after her decease my will and desire is that
all my lands, stock of all kinds and of what kind soever be equally divided between all my Children
and I do hereby appoint my beloved son David Cook and my friend Hardy Hurdle my executors
of this my last Will and Testament, and I do hereby renounce all other wills but this alone. In Witness
whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.

This Indenture made and indented this nineteenth day of July in the year of our Lord One
thousand eight hundred and thirteen by and between James Cook, John Cook, Archibald Cook,
Edward Cook, William Baldwin, and Martha his wife and Henry King of the one part Nehemiah
Cook of the second part and David Cook of the third part Witnesseth that whereas John Cook
late of Orange County died seized and possessed of a certain tract or parcel of land in Orange
County on Stoney Creek, containing Three hundred and thirteen acres which said land was
distributable among the children and heirs at law of said John Cook, and whereas the said land
hath been surveyed and laid out into three lots, and the said heirs and legatees having consented
to sell, and convey one lot of the said land to the said Nehemiah; and one other lot to the said
David Cook, Now this Indenture further Witnesseth that the said James, John, Archibald,
Edward,William and Martha his wife and the said Henry King, for in Consideration of the sum of
two hundred and six dollars paid to them by the said David Cook have given granted, bargained,
sold, released and confirmed and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, release, and confirm
to the said David Lot No. 1-of the said tract of land Bounded as follows-Beginning at the black Jack
the old corner running thence along the old line South 87 deg. West twenty one ch. 75 links to a
red Oak and pointers there a new line South 44 ch. 50 links to a stake in the Old line in the Old
field then alone the old line South 72 deg. East 19 ch. 75 links to a Hickory then alone the old line
South 85 deg. East 2 ch. 50 links to a black Jack then North 57 Chain 50 links to the beginning;

And the said James, John, Edward, Archibald, William and Martha
his wife and Henry King for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and thirty dollars to
them in hand paid by the said Nehemiah Cook have granted , bargained, sold, released and
confirmed to the said Nehemiah Cook and his heirs Lot No. 2, of the said tract of the said land
Bounded as follows –Beginning at a Red oak in the old line corner of division No. 5 and runs south
in the said line 44 ch. 50 links to a stake said corner, then North 72 deg. West 8 chains 75 links to
a stake, then South 64 deg. West 17 ch. 10 links to a hickory then No. 60 deg.
West along the old line 1 ch. 60 links to a Hickory Grub and pointers
then North a new line 44 ch. To a small Hickory in the old line, then along the old line North 87
deg. East 24 ½ chains to the beginning: containing 104 ¾ Acres---
To have and to hold the said several tracts or parcels of land to the said David Cook and to the said
Nehemiah Cook, severally and respective heirs, and assigns forever free and clear of all claims
and incumbrances, made or done or to be made and done by the said James, John, Archibald,
Edward, William and Martha and Henry King or any claiming by from or under them.

hundred and Sixteen, the legatees of John Cook deceased of the County of Orange and State of
North Carolina, To Wit, David Cook, James Cook, John Cook, William Baldwin and Martha his
wife, Edward Cook (of Rutherford County and State aforesaid) of the one part and James H. Gant
of the said state and County of the other part. Witnesseth that the said David Cook, and other
Legatees for an in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred and Sixty-Two Dollars in hand paid
by J.H. Gant at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents the Receipt whereof the said
David Cook, James Cook, John Cook, William Baldwin and Martha his wife and Edward Cook doth
hereby acknowledge hath granted, bargined, and sold, aliened, Released and confirmed and by
these presents doth grant bargain, and sell, alien and Release and confirm from themselves their
heirs and Assigns unto the said J.H. Gant his heirs and Assigns forever all that seat, tract or parcel
of land and premises situate, lying and being in the County of Orange and State aforesaid, on the
waters of Stoney Creek of Haw River.
Beginning at a small Hickory thence South forty-seven chains to a Hickory Grub, Mich Cook's
line thence North 60 West twenty two chains and fifteen links to a Hickory on the bank of Stoney
Creek thence up said creek to a stake on Harders line thence North eleven chains and fifty links
to a post oak thence North 47degrees West three chains and Seventy links to a Spanish Oak by
said creek, thence up the meander of said creek to a Black Oak Marleys Corner thence North 87
degrees East twenty four chains and twenty five links along the old line to the beginning—
containing One hundred and four and a third acres by estimation be the same more or less
bounded South by J.H. Gant land west by said creek and John Adams, North by Marleys, East
by Mich. Cook Land, together with the remainder and remainder reversion and reversion, Rents
and services thereof and also all the Estate, right, title, Interest, property, claim or demand
whatsoever In Equity as well as in Law of them the said David and other legatees will warrent
and forever defend the above seat, tract, or parcel of land unto the said James H. Gant his heirs
and Assigns forever And the said David Cook and other legatees for themselves their heirs doth
warrent and forever defend the above Tract or parcel of land from all and every person whatsoever
unto the proper use and behoof of said J.H. Gant. In Witness whereof David Cook, James Cook,

The Execution of the written Deed having been heretofore proved in said Court and admitted to
Registration and a Commission having issued by Order of this Court to John Trolinger and James
Hutchenson Esq. To take the private examination of Martha Baldwin one of the subscribers thereto
and the said John Trolinger and James Hutchenson having reported that they had privately
examined the said Martha Baldwin separately and apart from William Baldwin her husband that
she confessed she had Executed the said Deed freely and of her own Accord without the fear or
compulsion of her said husband Ordered that the said Deed with the Annexed Commission and
examination be Registered.

H. Gant hath produced a Deed of Conveyance made to him from David Cook, James Cook, John
Cook, William Baldwin and Martha Baldwin and David Cook ATTy for Edward Cook of a certain
tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Orange in the State aforesaid and procured
the same to be proved in our county Court and registered and it being represented to the said
court that Martha Baldwin wife of William Baldwin is old and infirm and unable to travel to our
said court to be privily examined concerning the Execution of the said Deed by her freely and of
her own accord; Know Ye that We in confidence of your prudence and fidelity here appointed and
by the presents do give unto you full power and authority to take the private examination of the
said Martha Baldwin wife of the said William Baldwin concerning her free consent in executing
the said Deed of Conveyance: And therefore We command you that at such certain day and place
as you shall think fit you go to or cause her to come before you and privily andapart from her said
husband examine her as to the Execution of the said Deed whether she executed the same freely
and of her own accord without fear or compulsion of her said husband and the examination so
taken being being distinctly and plainly wrote on said Deed or some paper annexed thereto, and
when you have taken said examination you are to send the same closed up under your hands and
seals together with this writ unto our said court to be held for the said County on the 4th Monday
of August next A.D. –
