La Casita II

La Casita II is a permanent, low-income housing program for formerly homeless families who have completed La Casita's treatment program. The facility was built through a grant from the New York State Department of Social Services/Homeless Housing Assistance Program and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Shelter Plus Care Program. The program currently offers twelve apartments, including apartments for large families. Residents also participate in La Casita's aftercare program and a variety of supportive services at UBP. Crisis intervention and other support are always available.

Eligibility: Tenants must have completed La Casita and meet low-income guidelines.

Day Care Center #1

Day Center #1 is a bilingual day care program, licensed by the New York City Department of Health and funded by the new York City Human Resources Administration/Agency for Child Development (HRA/ACD). It offers Preschool for 70 children between the ages of two and four years old, Kindergarten for 20 children from ages five to six years old and the School Age Program for 110 children ages six years to eleven years old.

Eligibility: Services are free of charge to families on public assistance. Working parents must pay a fee for the service based on their income (sliding scale) in accordance with HRA/ACD requirements.

La Escuelita

Bilingual adult education is provided for individuals 17 years or older at La Escuelita by the New York City Board of Education. Current class offerings include Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language and General Education Diploma Preparation in English and Spanish.

Eligibility: Admission is through the New York City Board of Education. Prospective students can call (718) 292-4104.

Emergency Food Programs

Programs to combat hunger include the Homeless Hot Meals Program which serves lunch/dinner to 225 homeless people on a daily basis at La Escuelita. Outreach is also provided by Peer Educators from UBP's prevention programs as a means of engaging these persons in other services offered by UBP, including referrals to shelters, transitional residences, residential and outpatient treatment programs, harm reduction program and HIV prevention services. On a regular basis, HIV prevention educational workshops are provided for those that wish to participate immediately before the meal. Meal tickets are given at 2:00P.M. and meals are served at 3:00P.M., Monday through Friday.

An Emergency Pantry provides 50-75 emergency food packages of groceries for individuals, families and the elderly each month. This is used as part of a crisis intervention strategy particularly for individuals who have temporarily lost their entitlements or need to stretch the small income they receive. The program is located at La Escuelita.

The Lincoln Acupuncture Meal Transport Program provides lunches to pregnant women and their children who participate in the Lincoln Hospital Acupuncture Program.
