Beliefs
I have three primary beliefs. First, free will is an illusion. As I studied psychology more and more, it became clear that consciousness is regulated by the laws of physics and chemistry at work in the brain. That doesn't mean, however, that the legal system must be abolished or that the human race can't have something that resembles ethics. Second, psychological hedonism is true: that is, all motives are selfish because it's impossible for a human being to make decisions that are not based on considerations of pleasure and pain. There can still be painful acts of sacrifice, though; it's just that the one making the sacrifice values the good, pleasure, or lack of guilt that will (or may) come from his/her decision more than the absence of pain or displeasure that will come if he/she does otherwise. Third, one's best efforts are insufficient to guarantee happiness. Hard work HELPS, and prior planning HELPS, but after it's all said and done, there are some things that are beyond our control. It's been said that the wise man is the one who knows what he can and can't control, and is happy despite what is beyond his power.

I know there are those who disagree with much of what I just said, and they're welcome to e-mail me for spirited, courteous debate.
