Gates Cemetery Restoration

The Restoration Begins - Spring, 1998

Boy Scouts and Scout Leaders from Troop 94 in Gates logged
hundreds of hours on the Eagle Scout Project to clear and restore the cemetery.

Years of neglect resulted in jungle-like conditions in parts of the cemetery. Here, volunteers begin hacking away at the overgrowth with weed-whackers, hoes, shovels and saws.

Troop 94 Adult Leaders like John Landers handled the heavier equipment needed to remove some of the vegetation. The Boy Scouts hauled load after load of debris from the site for disposal.

In this picture the wild grape vines have been removed from the corner of the cemetery which abuts the furniture store back buildings. Next, the area was graded and grass was planted. Today, lilac bushes are growing in this area.
