Gates Cemetery Restoration
Some of the Problems Encountered

Some of the gravesites had been reduced to fragments and the headstones buried by time. This stone, declaring "A Mother's Grave" marked the Scott site in which broken and buried headstones were recovered.

The Caudle Gravesite was totally overgrown by rose bushes and hidden from view. At some point in time roses had been planted here and over the years had overtaken the markers. Members of the Gates Garden Club and the Rose Society are working to preserve the old rose bushes. Some of the overgrowth has been removed. In the spring, many of the bushes will be transplanted and the site cleared further.

A tree planted many years ago, now just a stump, toppled this heavy stone. It was decided that the stump be left alone so as not to disturb graves below it. The base of the Bridgeman stone was later reset as close to the stump as possible, and the headstone was then levered into place.

A mound of dirt left carelessly sits atop the fallen and lost headstone of Rachel Wright. At first the mound was a mystery, but the 1957 aerial photo showed no mound present. Paul Kimmerley suspected a missing headstone was buried there and he unearthed a beautiful stone in fairly good condition.
