BETTY & DAVE
This is my story
I was born in 1929 during the depression. I was the youngest in a large family. When I was almost four years old my Mother left my Dad and us kids. He did his best to take care of us but he just couldn't. He decided since I was the youngest he would give me to a relative of his which I found out much later was his cousin and he and his wife had lost a baby at birth and thought they could not have anymore. I can still remember when his cousins wife came to get me.Another cousin brought her because she could not drive and her husband was deer hunting which he did every year in November. She took me home and I was so happy to be there. The house was so big it looked like a mansion to me. She gave me a hot bath and sat down in a rocking chair and was singing to me when her husband came home from hunting. He put down his gun and jacket and picked me up and said he was glad to have me as his little girl. From then on they were my Mom and Dad.
My Mom & Dad
I had Mom and Dad to myself for four years and my Mom would play house with me. She made clothes for my dolls and Dad who was a carpenter made me a china closet with real glass doors and also he made me a desk. I was in school by now and had a lot of friends , but I also had a new little sister who kept me busy because Mom took in boarders who worked in the coal mine and I would play with my sister so when she got sleepy I would wrap a piece of bacon around my finger and let her suck on it till she went to sleep. Today my sister says that is why she is fat,but she fogives me. Six years later we got another sister and I really had a lot of fun growing up with them. I didn't like school very much, I would hide my shoes or anything to get out of school but Itdidn't work because my Mother was smarter than me. Finally I quit school and went to work in a state hospital for awhile.By then I thought I could take care of myself which a lot of sixteen year olds think.
Now it's time for my little adventure in Califonia. My girl freind and I decided to go to her sisters in California. We did not tell our parents, we just took off on our own. My Mom wanted to call the police but my Dad said that I would come home when I was ready. I didn't like California very much, but we stayed for several months. I got a job in a glass factory but it didn't pay very much, so I got a job in a drug store in the evenings. It worked out pretty good  but I didn't have much time for myself. One night we went to a dance and I met a soldier who seemed to be very nice. We dated for about two weeks and then he asked me to marry him and I said yes. We were married two weeks later in the little chapel on the army base. It wasn't long till he was sent overseas and I was homesick, so I called Mom and Dad and asked if they would send me money to come home. Of course they said yes. Well I went home and it was so nice I never left again. My husband was gone for two years and in the meantime my Dad introduced me to a freind of his and we started going places together. He new I was married but it didn't matter we had a lot of fun. When my husband came home I settled down and we set up housekeeping. I got pregnent right away and as soon as I told my husband he took off and left me.I had a little boy and Dave stood by me and when my baby was two years old Dave and I were married. The only good thing I got out of my first marriage was my son who is fifty years old now. Dave and I have three other children and we have had a good life.We had our ups and downs but we are still together after  forty nine years. We have ten granchildren and five great grandchildren. I think I am very lucky to have such a wonderful family. My Mom and Dad are gone now but thanks to them for choosing me and giving me a chance to be myself. I loved them very much and always will.
