What got you started in writing poetry?

I started writing poetry three years ago when my grandfather passed away and I wrote a poem to get over the grief.  I have continued writing as a personal stress reliever, journal technique, and I have started carrying a journal with me and I now am beginning to crave to write whenever I am inspired.  That does not mean I am good, it means I am learning.  I don't want to be a poet, I am writing poetry to learn to write.  It is easier than trying to write a story because it is short.
A good way to start writing poetry is to try haiku.  Then write a series of haikus together as a poem.  If you have trouble rhyming, don't.  Read about it first, as it is not easy.  I am very bad at it as I just started trying.  A poem shows a story through sensory images.  It answers the questions:  who, what, when where, why, and how.  It shows you the senses of the subject.  It shows you its perspective and story.
