COMMUNITY

Creating, Living and Being Together

THE PRESENT

  OUR TOWN

100 Mile House is about ten miles south of us. with it's shopping facilities, 2,000 residents plus many more who, like us, see it as theirs, it has a remarkable sense of community, in the less "intentional" sense. A trip to town invariably involves a number of encounters with friends and associates, especially if we drop in to our favourite restaurant, Palominos.  To give an ongoing feel for this side of our larger community, I'll post opposite, from time to time, something from our local newspaper, the Free Press. Shades of Garrison Keiller's Lake Woebegone!

Youngster learns the fine art of watch repair

100 Mile Free Press.  March 3, 1999

Eleven year-old Meaghan Taylor has an unusual job for a girl her age. She works in a jewelry store and is learning the trade from the ground up, literally. “I do all kinds of jobs", she said cheerfully. “I clean up, put watches and jewelry away, keep track of stock and I even get to wind the grandfather clock.”

Taylor has been working at Shadel’s Jewellers for almost two years. The store is owned by her grandmother, Delores Fisher, and her grandmother’s friend, Sharon McMullen. “It’s like having two grandmothers when I’m in the store,” said Taylor. “Sharon treats me just like my grandma does. It’s one of the reasons I like working there so much,” she beamed.
