Our Mitchell Ancestors
These are the surnames that we researching with this line are:
Mitchell, Whitaker, Southern, Cunningham,
Chadwell, Estes and Easter.
My husband is from a line of Mitchell's that were from the Cumberland
Gap area (Claiborne County)of TN and originally came from
Guilford County, NC.
1. Rex Van Den Mitchell b:31 Dec 1911 in Claiborne
County,TN m: 5 Oct 1934 to Marie Cadle in Wise Co. VA
d:1 Sep 1993 in Columbia, SC buried at Crescent Hill
Cemetery in Columbia, SC
2. James Isaac Mitchell b: 28 May 1878 in Claiborne Co.
TN m: 21 Dec 1910 to Winnie Frances Whitaker **more
information will be coming soon on the Whitaker Family**
in Claiborne Co. TN d: 31 Oct 1967 in Lowden, TN buried
at Harrogate, Claiborne Co., TN. *Ike as he was called
was in TN SGT 79 Co.Coast Arty Corps Spanish American War*

b: 16 Oct 1918 in Tazewell, TN m:Frances Washbern,1 Aug
1942 Pine Bluff, ARK; Carlton Wheeler b: 27 May 1913
d: d: 6 Jan 1933 buried at Cave Springs Cemetery in
Tazewell, Claiborne Co., TN; and Irene June b: 28 Jun 1931
in Tazewell, TN m: 6 Apr 1948 Herbert Gibson
3. John Mitchell b: abt 1846 in Greensboro, Guilford Co.,
NC m: abt 1874 Mary Southern of Lee Co., VA
*This is where things gets sketchy. John deserted his wife
Mary and their children. According to a grandson John ran
off and started another family not far from the his first
family. No other information is known about John. There
is another family that came from John's second family and
nothing is known about them as well. Rex Mitchell told me
that he remembered that the Mitchell's came from
Greensboro,Guilford County,NC
John and Mary's children are:
James Isaac (see above); Neal b: abt 1880 d: 1965 and is
buried in Brooks Cemetery in Claiborne Co., TN; Clint b:
abt 1882 in Claiborne Co., TN; Sally b: 5 Apr 1883 in
Claiborne Co., TN m: Joseph Lambert d: 31 Dec 1959
Harrogate, Claiborne, TN and is buried at Caves Springs;
Fount b: abt 1885 in Claiborne Co., TN
4. Jesse Mitchell b: abt 1825 place unknown m: bef
1846 wife's name unknown and no information abt death or
location.
* According to Rex Mitchell there was at least two sons that were born to Jesse in NC but no others were
known John was the only one who left NC and moved to TN and did so with an uncle according to Rex. The other son Charles stayed in Guilford.*
This is all the information that I have on this branch of my husband's family at this time.
