GEORGE LEON SMITH
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
JAN 19, 1936  TO AUG 8, 2001
George was born in Hollis, OK Jan 19, 1936 to George Washington Smith and Debbie Evelyn Harris. He came into this life as a farmers' son worked hard throuhout his young life and at an early age, joined the United States Army, this was about 1954. He began serving  his country at the end of the Korean War, continued through several  tours overseas, then served two tours in Vietnam. He finished his military career as a Sergeant First Class, stationed in Ft. Riley, Kansas in 1974. He retired and started a second career as a Corrections Officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.   He worked at TDCJ for a period of ten years , finally retiring for good and moving to Wellington, Texas; where he spent his remaining years. In Jul 2001, he was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer, a very fast moving cancer that took his life on August 8th of 2001. He was a gentle giant, not because of his stature but because of his quiet demeanor. he was fair but firm. I sit here with tears in my eyes as I type this,  my memories come flooding back like a tidal wave that just can't be stopped. His love, devotion and duty to family and country cannot be denied , I only hope that I can be half the man he was. We Love You Dad, and will miss you always.

DEPHINA DIANA SMITH
Dephina or Deedy as she was known to us was born on July 24, 1960 in Frankfurt, Federal Republic of Germany. She was to say the least " a go-getter " from the start, once she decided she was going to do something, there was no stopping her. She graduated from Amarillo High School and then join the United States Air Force, serving several years. Then after marrying Tim Stancombe and having a child, she went to work for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a Corrections Officer and a secretary. She divorced and remarried to Leland Holliman, moving to Page, Arizona working for the Department of the Interior, Land Management Bureau as a computer technician. On October 8, 1997, Deedy , along with 8 others from the bureau were killed in a plane crash in Montrose, Colorado. She was buried in the North  Fairview Cemetery, Wellington, TX, next to Grandma and Grandpa Stanley where she always said she wanted to be buried. This was made possible by Catherine and Horace Holliman, who selflessly gave thier plots to Deedy so this dream could be fulfilled. Their kindness will never be forgotten by myself or the rest of the family. They were good friends who showed the ultimate kindness--surly there is a place in heaven for such loving and caring people who most deservedly belong there for they are our angels here on earth--God Bless them and protect them always. We did not expect this unforseen tragedy that killed Deedy and the others, nor were we prepared for the outpouring of  love from those around her. A monument now stands in Page, Arizona and Montrose, Colorado in their honor. She lived her life to the fullest, taking it all in with a "can-do attitude" and always beleived in " Never Say Never"! Her favorite nickname for me was "ole goat" and from time to time I can still hear her calling me that when I stop and reflect. Dee, we love you and will never forget--your always in our hearts and memories.
