The Daniel H. Brush Chapter was organized on January 24, 1963. State Regent, Mrs. Albert G. Peters, installed Mrs. Anthony Blass as our first regent. The chapter started with 18 members, four of whom continue in the chapter today.
In 1984 nine members compiled and printed a chapter history, edited by then Regent Mrs. James Morris. For the 1991 Illinois State Organization History book the chapter history was summarized by then Regent Mrs. Charles B. Muchmore.
In April of 1965 the Chapter initiated the practice of buying a wreath for the grave of Daniel H. Brush. The City of Carbondale has continued this practice and annually invites the current Regent to lay this wreath during the services on Memorial Day in Woodlawn Cemetery.
During the regency of Mrs. Elisabeth P. Leighty DAR medals were first awarded to two cadets in the Aerospace ROTC program at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. It was the 30th year of our participation in the project.
Twice in the history of the chapter our candidate for Good Citizen has been the winner at the state level. We are very proud of our work with school children as well as with the DAR schools.
Our proximity to the Marion Veterans' Administration Medical Center has made participation with veterans' activities a priority. Additionally we were part of the Department of Defense project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the end of WW II.
The proud history of the chapter continues to be written in our work toward the fulfilling of the goals of our beloved National Society.
