We are just fine here. The year is seeming to fly by. Cub Scouts is keeping us quite busy. We are starting up a pack here at Dexheim. Currently there is no Boy Scout program here. We are planning a large recruiting drive for the community. It will include flyers put on doors, displayes in the stores (PX), newspaper ads, and radio ads this will all culminate in a large meeting on evening of 13 September in the Elementary school here. Please pray that our pack will grow and prosper. |
Samuel is still being homeschooled and doing well. He is doing second grade work and itching to move on but Mama is making sure that he has everything down before moving to the next level. He wants to write in cursive so bad that he can taste it but we are still working on getting his printing to look better. Samuel is doing a different curriculium this school year called Sonlight which is very literature based and can't wait until next year to get here cause we will be reading Charlottes Web. He is doing Scott Foresman math and 1st year Science His History, Bible, and Reading are combined. |
Germany is a country about the size of Oregon consisting of 16 states and home to about 80,000,000 people. The Central Part of Germany where we are stationed is considered the wine making capitol of the country with vineyards far and wide. Farming other things such as sunflowers, sugar beets, and white asperagus is also very common. This is a country that is very modern with autobahn highways and lots of cars but yet in many cases is frozen in time. It is not unusual to see a farmer on his tractor working in the vineyards while right in the next field is another farmer walking behind a horse and plow. Many villages dot the countryside that have been inhabited for hundreds and even thousands of years. Many homes are now housing the third and fourth and sometimes even fifth generation of the same family. The countryside is also dotted with castles (schloss or burg in German) of which many have been renovated so one can actually go inside and imagine what it was like to live in these huge fortresses of stone. There is also alot of influence stemming from the Roman Empire.During the time of the Roman Empire germanic tribes moved to lands east of the Rhine and North of the Black Sea in A.D. 9 under the leadership of Arminius and by the time of Constantine Roman Rule was breaking down and the country was overrun by the Franks and Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. After his death in 843 the Frankish empire was split into a Latin west and a Germanic east led by Ludwig the German. In the 10th century the area came under the rule of the Saxons and in 955 Otto the Great strengthened his ties to the papacy and in 962 was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. The influence of powerful dynastic German families increased and by the 13th century the Roman emperor had little power. In the 15th century the Habsburgs were elected Holy Roman Emperors and retained the title until it was abolished some four hundred years later. By the 17th century Germany was embroiled in the Thirty Years War and by the end of that century the prussians were emerging as a dominant european power and continued so sparking Germany's unificationin in 1871 under Otto Von Bismarck. France sought revenge for the Prussian war of 1871 and World War I broke out in 1914. Germany was defeated in 1918 hastened by the entry of the United States the year before. In the 1920's and 1930's Germany suffered galloping inflation sparking the rise of the Nazi Party and the leadership of Adolph Hitler. After Germany's defeat in World War II the country again was divided into east and west and the Berlin wall was erected in 1961 but on November 9, 1989 the wall fell and once again Germany was one nation and celebrates its reunification day on October 3 |
