Welcome to our Life Quest study of the Book of Proverbs!
A proverb is a short, concise sentence which conveys moral truth. The Book of Proverbs is a collection of these wise statements.
The word proverb comes from a Hebrew word meaning "to rule or govern". We need to let the Word of God rule in and govern our lives. We do this by first understanding God's instructions and then obeying them. We become truly wise as we walk according to God's ways!!
Solomon wrote most of the book which includes proverbs he authored as well as some which he collected from other sources. Agur and Lemuel contributed some of the proverbs in the later chapters.
The main theme of the Book of Proverbs is the nature of true wisdom and how to attain it. Many of the proverbs compare wisdom with folly, the wise person with the foolish, and the contrasting results of wise and foolish attitudes and behavior.
Proverbs are considered as Jewish poetry. However, generally the words do not rhyme. Rather, the technique is a contrasting of or building upon related thoughts and ideas.
The wisdom and examples contained in the proverbs are meant to equip the hearers to apply divine wisdom in their daily lives and provide moral instruction.
We are told in the first chapter that knowing God is the key, the very beginning, of wisdom.
We are to act on the wisdom we receive as we read the proverbs and are given understanding by the Holy Spirit of God.
Knowledge is a collection of facts and observations we have learned. Wisdom is the ability to use the knowledge we have rightly and beneficially as we apply it to life.
Without wisdom our knowledge is useless.
To a new testament believer, knowing Jesus Christ is wisdom:
I corinthians 1:30 But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: that, according as it is written, he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
To know Jesus is to be a wise man.
"Wise men still seek Him"
"No Jesus, no wisdom. Know Jesus, know wisdom!"
We are currently under way in our weekly study through the Book of Proverbs and we welcome you to join us. You will grow wiser and closer to God as you learn and apply His words of wisdom. It will be a blessing to you!
