Elise's Arrival

Elise Kenna was born 3/13/99,
she weighed 5 lb 14 oz, and was 18 1/2 inches long.
Conception and pregnancy this time around was just as easy as it was with my first. I am a truly blessed individual.
Since my first labor and delivery were so fast, everyone warned me to be prepared for the second to be faster! They were right.
Elise was due on April 3, 1999. At 35 1/2 weeks, I began to lose my mucous plug and new that this baby would probably come around 37 weeks just like her sister did. I notified my doctor and saw him on Thursday, March 4. I was dialated to 2 1/2 cm and scheduled another appointment to see him on Wednesday, March 10. At that appointment (36 1/2) weeks, I was having early labor symptoms and was dialated to 3 1/2 - 4 cm. They gave me a non-stress test and discovered all was well, but he still sent me home to total bedrest for the remaining three days until reaching full-term at 37 weeks.
Meanwhile, my doctor informs me that he is leaving after work to go to Montana on a ski trip! "But don't worry, I'll be back Sunday," were his final words. Because I was dialating and we knew that my previous delivery was a fast one, we scheduled an appointment for me to see his associate on Friday morning, March 12. I left the clinic after seeing him dialated to 4 cm and 60% effaced. My orders were to take it easy for the rest of the day and tomorrow I would be full-term.
Saturday, March 13, started out as a normal day. I felt great, as usual. Around 1:00 pm, I started having what I knew as Braxton-Hicks. . . no big deal. The only difference this time is that they were somewhat regular. At 3:00 pm, I went for a walk and decided that when I returned I would call the doctor and inform him of the contractions. They were not painful at all, but I didn't want to be dialating to the point that I wouldn't make it to the hospital!
I went to the hospital around 4:30 pm and was hooked up to the fetal montor. Contractions every 3 minutes, but not painful - I was talking/laughing through them. The doctor checked me at 5:00 pm. Now I was 5 cm and 100% efaced. We knew then we would be having a baby. He broke my bag of water and then left for home for awhile (he had already delivered three babies that day). My labor progressed quickly and at 6:00 pm I began to want to push. I was checked at 6:10 and I was ready. The doctor was called to get back as soon as possible, "AND DON'T CHANGE CLOTHES," they screamed at him! My nurse wheeled me into the delivery room and wound up catching Elise herself at 6:17 pm. The docotr flew through the doors about 30 seconds later and finished up. He was wonderful about it, and I am glad that he did make it, even if it wasn't "on time."
Elise now has pictures in her scrap book of the doctor that was supposed to deliver her but went skiing, then the doctor who was on call to deliver her, and finally the nurse who did! All in all - once again, we had fun with it! :-)
