Questions to Ask of Any Breeder
How many years have you been breeding wheatens?
How often do you breed (how many litters a year)?
Do you use a written sale agreement when you sell a puppy? Give a 6 generation pedigree?
Does your sale agreement list the guarantees you make, including health?
Do you exhibit your dogs? Yourself? Or do you use a handler?
About how many of your dogs have finished championships?
Do you or have you ever sold puppies to a puppy broker, wholesaler, or pet shop?
Do you have breeds other than Wheatens? If so, how many?
At what age are your puppies placed in their new homes?
Do you require that your puppies be spayed/neutered? If not, do you require a co-own?
Have you ever had RD, PLE, or PLN in your dogs? Dysplasia? Eye problems?
How many dogs have you lost (if any) to such illnesses? How do you test your dogs? How often do you test?
What is your shipping procedure? Who pays the cost of shipping?
What vaccinations does the puppy have when it is sent to it's new home? Has it been checked for internal parasites? By what method?
Was the puppy born in a home or kennel environment? Socialized from birth? How?
Do you require that the puppy be shown? If so, do you require that I hire a handler?
Many breeders will give you answers to these questions even before you ask. While you may not wish to ask all of these, they are questions I'd ask if I were buying a puppy. You'll find that prices vary greatly (sometimes far too high). But more important than price is canine health and a conscientious breeder who provides regular assistance to you during your puppy's life.
