The day we met Patches
About a year and a half ago, it was my girlfriend Sue's birthday. The two of us took the day off to just hang out.
We stopped at a local animal shelter with the intention of visiting the puppies and going on with our day.
Well, there weren't any puppies where we stopped. So Sue says, "Why don't we take a ride to the North Shore Animal League?" I said, "Sure, why not."
Well, we walked into the place with the sole intention of visiting and going home, when one of the workers stopped us and asked if we needed some help finding a dog. We said no, we just came to visit and that we're not looking for a dog.
That's when he nailed us. He said yeah, but if you were what would you be looking for? So we told him, something medium- sized, nothing we could trip over and kill, but not too big as it would be in an apartment. He said come over here I just have to show you this dog, it just arrived someone dropped it off about 1/2 hour ago.
Well, he let "Rosie" out of her cage, and asked if we wanted to play with her. We said sure, it was an adorable dog, and that was why we went there in the first place. So he handed the leash to Sue and pointed us towards the play area.
I have never seen a dog more afraid than she was at that moment. We played with her for over an hour and she finally stoped shaking, a little. I saw that Sue was loving this, and very nonchalantly asked her if she wanted to keep her. She responded with a resounding NO, I can't. I dropped it.
Well, what put it over the edge was while we were sitting there playing with the dog, a little girl of maybe 4 or 5 came over to pet her and Rosie just started to lick the little girl's face all over.
I looked at Sue and saw she was starting to cry, I asked again if she wanted to get the dog and she burst into happy tears and said yes.
Well we spent the next two or three hours filling out papers and waiting like expectant parents to see if we would be approved to adopt her. When it was all over Susan went home with, what to this day, she calls the best Birthday present she has ever gotten !
