1998 CanAm High Performance Distance Circuit
North American middle distance runners continually struggle to find quality track meets in North America during the summer months. Our athletes are fit and ready for significant performance improvements, but many either can't afford to get to Europe or can't get into races over there.
The CanAm High Performance Distance Circuit--a series of 5 high performance meets contested over 14 days in New England and eastern Canada--has been developed to provide athletes with high-performance competition opportunities in the 800-10,000 event range so that they can pursue World Championships, Olympic Games, and USATF qualifying standards. Meets in this series will be run in the twilite hours and will provide rabbits.
Estimated Athlete Costs
The CanAm circuit organizers are arranging a charter bus to provide transportation between meets and arranging low cost housing options at each of the events. The current estimated cost for inter-meet transportation and lodging is approximately $300.
Funding is available for U.S. athletes from USATF Development Committees. Women's Development currently has budgeted $300 sponsorships for 3 athletes per event group (800m, 1500m, 5,000m, and 10,000m). Men's Development will also provide sponsorships, however the number has not been determined yet. Please contact your event chair (men or women) for futher information and to register your interest.
Meet Entries
Athletes may compete in any one or all of the meets. The individual meet directors have final control over entries into their fields. Athletes who desire to compete in an individual meet should contact that event's director for entry info, or Mike Scott at miscott@worldnet.att.net for general info. Athletes interested in participating in the entire two-week series should see the information below on participation in the Summer Middle-Distance Tour.
Summer Middle-Distance Tour
At last summer's High Altitude Camp, participating althletes realized that if they and their peers showed up at the same place at the same time with the goal of running fast then fast times would follow. With this philosophy in mind, Greg Harger is organizing a Summer Middle-Distance Tour of athletes that will be traveling to and competing in all of the meets in the CanAm Circuit. Athletes interested in participating should contact Greg by e-mail at invaders@indy.net or phone (317-243-6385) for futher information as soon as possible.
