Ray Rhodes-Past, Present and Future
Ray Rhodes has been hired as the 12th head coach in Green
Bay Packers history. Prior to joining the Packers as head coach, Rhodes
was head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles for 4 seasons. In his first
2 seasons, th
e
Eagles were 10-6 and made the Playoffs both seasons. His last 2 seasons
were 2 that he would like to forget. Major injury and QB problems hurt
the 1997 and 1998 Eagles teams. Throughout his coaching career he has
been involved in 5 Super Bowls.
He started his Professional coaching career in 1981 as
defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He left the 49ers
in 1992, to become Defensive Coordinator for the Packers, a position
which he held for only 2 years. In 1993, his second year as a Packers
assistant, he coached the Packers Defense to a 2nd best ranking in the
NFL. He then returned to the 49ers to become their Defensive Coordinator.
When he left, he stated race problems in the city as the major reason.
He said that his children were being harassed in school.
Former 49ers head coach Bill Walsh said "What I liked
most abotu Ray was that he was completely committed. He demanded of
himself and his men. He would have made a great general. Men respect
him, hecause he's a non-nonsense guy who cuts right to the issue."
Ray Rhodes has been known to have an exceptional ability
to relate to his players. Rhodes also has an ability to know how much
he can get out of a player, how much he wants to succeed. He knows how
to motivate players and get them ready for games.
Now that he is head coach of the Packers, Rhodes says
that its a Fear of Failure that keeps him motivated to succeed as Packers
coach. Rhodes and his wife Carmen have 4 daughters, Detra, Candra, Tynesha,
and Raven. He brought with him many of his Eagles assistants. Below
