Introduction
This activity is going to require you to use constructivism.  You will build on the skills that you have learned in the past, such as research and writing.  For students whose last name is A-M, you are the commissioner of the NHL.  You job is to establish what will satisfy you and your organization in the current lockout.  Students N-Z, you are the NHLPA President, and you must establish what will satisfy you and your organization.
The big picture is this: We covered labor disputes in the past, you need to essentially solve the NHL Lockout of 2004.

The Task
The result of this activity will be:
A formulated position that is defended.  At the end of the assignment due date, 1 representative from each side will debate their findings, trying to pursuade other class mates to switch sides on the issue.  When all the assigments are handed back and graded, you will revise the copy and I will give you the necessary contact information and we will mail them to their respective parties to see if we get a response.
Links that might help.
NHLPA
CNN
Sports Illustrated
This assignment will require you to use the Internet, along with 2 other print sources (i.e. magazines, books, etc.)

The Process
To complete this assignment, here is what you must do:
1. This project is an individual project.
2. The paper must be no shorter than 4 pages and no longer than 6 pages.
3. 1 page must summarize the issue of the lockout.
4. 2-4 pages must explain your actual solution.
5. 1 page must explain how your solution will work.
Use the links that were given to you during the teaching of the lesson as references to information that will enhance your position of the situation.  It will benefit you grately if you construct a timeline prior to writing your paper to establish precidence in labor disputes.

Evaluation
Students are evaluated on the following criteria:
Meets Requirements Student did not meet any of the requirements Students met 3-4 of the requirements Students met all 5 of the requirements
Students met 1-2 of the requirements
Accuracy/Reliable Information
Information is drawn from creditible sources.  2 print resources are used.
Information is erronious, and from uncreditible sources.
Student uses Internet and only 1 print source.
Student only uses Internet sources.
Grammatical Errors More than 10 grammatical errors 6-9 grammatical errors 3-6 grammatical errors Under 3 grammatical errors

Conclusion
Students will learn that they can make a difference in society.  So many times students think that no one is listening to them, or that what they say does not matter.  Getting a response from either the NHL or NHLPA would show them otherwise.  It also prepares them for college, in which research papers will include far more intense time, energy, and effort involved.
