Did you find the transition from college to pro difficult or easy?
I found it very difficult. In college you have one or two lines that can score, in the pros anybody on the ice can score at any time. Also, the scheduling, the most games that I played a year in college was thirty or thirty-one and I have played 49 this year. The scheduling, the travel and there is a lot more distractions off ice. We have a lot of things that we deal with as far as travel, family and friends. We go on the road for 8 or 9 days at a time, on a bus, no flying; it’s hard to adapt to those accommodations.
How did you feel coming on to an expansion team?
I look at it as a challenge. I went to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. My freshman year was their first year in Division I so it’s kind of the same situation.
Any superstitions?
Some, I always have spaghetti and meatballs the day of a game. Little things like that, I don’t know if you call them superstitions or what. When you play 80 games you get in the habit of doing the same things. I mean, if I don’t have spaghetti and meatballs for lunch it’s not the biggest thing in the world, I am not going to go out and have a bad game because of it. I am a big believer that if you prepare mentally for the game you’ll play as well as you possibly can.
What is the most memorable experience of you career?
Probably being chosen by the Hartford Whalers in the draft of 1994. I had just finished my senior year of high school and signed my letter of intent to go to University of Massachusetts. I am from Connecticut, the draft was in Connecticut and being drafted by the Hartford Whalers is something that I really didn’t expect. What did you do as a kid that got you in the most trouble?
I tried to stay out of trouble when I was a kid. I didn’t get in too much trouble…I blamed everything on my two older brothers.
I you had 15 seconds and the entire world is listening, what would you say?
I would need 14 seconds just to think about it.
If you could have any superhero power what would it be?
I’d say I would want to be like Superman. He can do about anything
Tell us something we don’t know about you?
I love to cook. That’s something I really enjoy.
What’s your best dish?
I make a mean Jumbalaya. |
